Doing the A1 firmware update 2.02 via the Creator's app which is a nice feature - if it does't brick my camera. Interested in the "Fixes an issue where the camera might not work properly when using the SEL200600G lens" as I have not been real happy with mine. Typical vague description, but what the heck. Also, it contains the other, more vague, "Improves the operational stability of the camera" fix.
The stabilization on these cameras has finally reached the point where they are pretty much perfect for this purpose. I'd love for someone to come up with a camera with all the GoPro features but with a bigger sensor. I don't think GoPro will ever do it because they are targeting action consumers who want the smaller footprint and a $400 price level. You might remember that I tried a Sony version a few years ago that touted a larger sensor, it was a grand, but it was absolute junk. I even got the guy who designed it at Sony involved , but then he went silent and they pulled the product from the market.
Photographed this Citation Encore last week for a client. The good thing about this shot was, the client ran the AC for me, while I was photographing the interior, as it sure gets hot inside these aircraft during the summer, especially.
Got a temp indicator on my R5 this morning. I was on a shoot for a homeless mission in Plano, ambient was in the mid nineties, just shooting stills, no video. The camera didn't shut down, but the thermometer icon popped up so it was thinking about overheating. Fortunately I had my R5C hanging over my shoulder to "take the heat" off the R5. The last time I saw that icon was shooting The Texas Raiders B-17 in Dallas the year before the accident. I was cranking through the shots then and it didn't surprise me. The R5 never has shut down on me, but it's an uncomfortable position to be shooting in.
I guess that is why I got the R5C. I don't use the video as much as I thought...yet, however that may pick up this fall. But here in Central Texas where, well, like today we had a heat index of 112° I was afraid of the R5 overheating. Anyway, I love the R5C. I really like the different menus for still and video. It is like two different cameras in one body. Very nice.
On another thought, I am considering replacing my EF 100-400 with the RF 100-500. I am getting spoiled with the RF 50 and no converter.
Canon is telling me that the C400 will outperform anything that I have shot with to date, they say it outperforms the RED Komodo X, and the Sony Murano at $26,000. I'm going to take a look at it in September when they release it. I do love the R5C for all the reasons you mentioned.
I haven't had time to look at my air to air shots yet. Here are some pix from Iceland.
Just beautiful photography here Douglas! #2 Exceptional! All are most excellent!
Were you able to "connect" with Rajan Parrikar?
Again SUPER compositions!

- with the C400 winning the video war
- with the R5C taming the overheating issue
- maybe video will not have as much of an influence on the R5? Meaning, they could put their "big" sensor in the R5 leaving the R5C their mainline video/still camera, taking the pressure off the R5?

Who knows what they are thinking? The C400 will be more for the cinematographer market with a few hybrid guys like me thrown in. The R5C is such an amazing workhorse, and a great "B" Roll camera as a companion to the C400 as well. I don't see a lot of R5C users spending $8,000 (great a price as that is) on the C400, when the R5C produces such outstanding video. If I do it, it will be because I am in a weird market where the C400 would add some capabilities and have the presence of a true cinema camera and that is not an insignificant advantage, sometimes the client's impression is almost as important as the end product.
We'll see, I'm supposed to get one of the first ones in the country in September. Another Eason that I'm thinking about it is, I'd like to have a cinema camera that I can leave tricked out and not have to assemble/disassemble for each use like I have to do with the R5C. Being able to use all of my "RF" glass without an adapter would be nice too.
I'm supposed to be shooting a residential pool project tomorrow, but I just got a call from one of my clients and he would like me on his project instead. They are assembling a couple of cranes that will be used to lift building panels in place, he's expecting 17 tractor trailers to arrive in the morning and he wants me to document the ingress and assembly. Should be some cool perspectives!

Good luck with the update...Douglas might have info on that as well.

You got some killer shots on your website, especially the rainbow canyon ones.

Douglas,
beautiful images of Iceland. I only saw the airport on my way to/from Norway in early May. #2 is incredible, but all are beautiful.

Thank you Dan and Gero! Iceland is really unique geologically, waterfalls, volcanos, imposing mountains... really a landscape photographer's paradise. And it's only 5.5 hours away from Maryland! Beats going to California for sure. Interesting enough, two B-2 bombers landed in Iceland last year for some kind of exercise. I bet it must something for people in a small country to see something like that.
Anyway, here are some shots from the NATO Tiger Meet in Germany on June 5. I didn't know anything about it until the day before when someone from the air to air shoot told me about it, and it was only 25 minutes drive from where I was staying in Germany. I shot from outside the fence along with a couple hundred folks, only for taking off and landing. The takeoff was in the "wrong" direction, we only got the tails in distance and the exhaust gas. The landing in the morning round was very nice but the landing in the afternoon round was tough with the lighting. I was very happy to be able to see a variety of European fighter jets (Tornado, Typhoon, Gripen, Rafale) that I had never seen before, not even on the ground. So this was a bonus for me, it wasn't part of the planned trip.
I noticed the French Typhoon in the last picture is a bit different from the German Typhoon above it. The French one has a sensor/antennae(?) in front of the cockpit.
