I bought a G9 recently, partly to lighten my load in some cases and to use in places were the risk of damage is high (see kayaking).
I went through the usual torture when buying new equipment, comparing features, reading reviews, testing the choices. And then of course agonizing over the advantages and disadvantages for my uses because the choice never seems to be obvious. "If only this camera had this and that camera had that, it would be perfect."
In the end, I came down to four cameras and these pluses and minusesx:
Canon G9. RAW mode, terrific build, best macro performance, more zoom on the long end, largest LCD, probably second in image quality and noise performance to the Fujii.
Panasonic LX2. 28 mm on wide end, RAW mode, good image quality, noise problems even at lower settings, no viewfinder.
Fuji F50fd. Best image quality, best noise performance @ 400, lightest and most compact, least expensive, no RAW mode, no viewfinder.
Nikon 5100. Good color/contrast, less expensive than G9, no RAW mode, serious noise problems.
So, after all that, here's what I wanted - RAW mode, image stabilization, Macro performance, usability and the LCD of the G9, the wide end of the zoom on the LX2, the resolution, noise performance and weight of the F50fd - oh yea, and its price, too. The 5100 didn't impress.
The tipping point for me was the macro performance on the G9 because I do a lot of it on the type of trips where I'd take the smaller camera. The Fuji was a close second becaues of its size and image quality....Show more →
I use the G9 for a lot of macro work and run into a constant problem of lens shadow. With the flash located off to the side and focusing up close, there is a HUGE shadow created by the lens. That was the first huge disappointment that we had with the G9. Then, when we loaded the images into Adobe's Lightroom, the resulting noise was a further disappointment.
I have not yet mounted an external flash onto the G9 to see if the shadow can be delt with. I have usually used the zoom to work around that. But that is not entirely satisfactory. I am a long time Canon user and feel pretty let down by the G9. Not at all the camera I thought it was. One of my coworkers is rabidly anti Fuji and would not allow me to get a Fuji camera so I went with what I thought was the best non SLR Canon.
