Are you kidding ? You will never see any 'properly focused shots' or you will not know you are looking at one

Sorry, I just don't see it.

I have to agree... I think this shows that it ain't the equipment. I mean, it looks like half the shots here are NOT in focus, let alone the other issues.

If you don't know how to drive a supercar, you might end up off the road-- and slower to your aunt's house than if you took a honda civic.

Ok, maybe it's not half the shots... but really, I know it's a harsh thing to say, but I would not call these great shots... not close on the whole.

I guess I would like to see some great shots so I can be in awe, would you mind posting some? It's nice to offer some opinion on critique but to say these are not great shots that gets my curiosity up.

Constructive critique is often welcome....although this is more of a lens aficionado thread than an artistic photo exibit.
However, outright/hastily denigrating comments seldom speak well of their authors.
It is much better to say nothing if one does not have anything positive to say.

Judging from the images posted here, it re-enforces the saying - 'It's not the gear one uses, it's the photographer'.

For those interested I found another shot with the 200. This was with a 25mm extension tube added.

Ron, that last shot is a nice one. Something deserving of being in this thread.

I think the rest of the images are lackluster though. The model shots are not inspiring... what do those shots do or say? The flower shots are nothing special... they're flower shots with either strange composition and lighting and post, or just a soft shot of flowers. The wrestling shot will be loved by the kids's parents... but again, not a compelling shot.

Both subject and technique on the rest of the shots seems lacking to me.

But, I think most of what is posted on the web is lackluster (something I am guilty of too I am sure). If you want me to delete this whole comment, I am happy to, but you asked if some of us were directing our comments to you... and I'm saying to you, but also to the rest of the the images... and that I like you last image quite a bit.

Also, I'm just one person with just one opinion. Feel free to take it with a grain of salt.

Russ, Than you for your explanation, I do not agree with you though and yes you are right it is just your opinion in which you are entitled to. I get many comments on some of the pictures that you feel are lack luster. Hope that some day you can find some good in a lot more images other then the top .001%, this place would be a very boring site if only the best of the best where ever shown.

PS, reread the thread title, It does not say, Lets see the very best that a 200 can do, He was asking to see images from this lens.

OK. I will address the "focus" problem. Actually it is not really a "problem" but part of the characteristics of a 200mm F/1.8 lens and the main reason that many people buy one. Depth of field. Remember that a 200 F/1.8 wide open at a distance of 30 ft has a depth of field of about 7 inches as compared to an 85 F/1.8 with a DOF of 3.5 feet at the same distance. Even the 135 F2 at that distance has a DOF 2x that of the 200 1.8 at 1.5 feet. That is what makes the 200 1.8 such a difficult lens to shoot but also gives it the ability to separate the subject from the background. The new 200 F2 will not be much better. It will only have a DOF of about 8" at 30 feet and IS will not help there. The DOF on the 200 1.8 is so small that I once shot a cheerleading competition with it in continuous focus mode and one of the competitor's breasts were so large that when I would focus on her face and then reframe the shot to center her in the frame the camera would refocus on her breasts and take her face outside of the DOF.

A few more indoor shots:

Ron, yours are better ones. But look at some some other images, I mean, those are the best pictures taken with this $5K lens? This thread meant to showcase the best of the best what this lens can do and give people the feeling "WOW, I want that lens!", not just to demonstrate its low light capability (I already know that). Instead, you see some mediocre pictures at best. How disappointing! Hence, my above comment. Believe me, I appreciate this lens and know what this lens could do in the hands of excellent photographers.

This was shot at 200 / 1.8 not what I would call a killer image but bokeh is smooooth.

This isn't a great shot, it's bread and butter, but it shows that this lens is versatile especially in low light, and it is wickedly sharp at f1.8. This was taken at dusk and light was fading fast. 5D, 800 iso, handheld, in-camera JPEG:

IMO, nothing wrong with that shot. Especially given the shot parameters,
the image clarity/detail is superb.

I say this without prejudice against any of the posted photos, many of which I really enjoy - but maybe the moral of the story is don't part with $5k for a lens unless you've got subjects to shoot that justify the expense.

Hi Michael,

I just thought your comment: "The DOF on the 200 1.8 is so small that I once shot a cheerleading competition with it in continuous focus mode and one of the competitor's breasts were so large that when I would focus on her face and then reframe the shot to center her in the frame the camera would refocus on her breasts and take her face outside of the DOF." was funny and after I read it, I could imagine what my wife would say if I was the photographer and showing her those shots after that shoot **
