For Canon the news gets worse: Within 12 months the 20MP+ FF in a D3 body will appear; D3 is the PJ/Sports model to compete against 1D III.

I really hope the performance of these babies matches the specs. And what about the 2 new lenses: 14-24 f/2.8 and 24-70 f/2.8.

Spot on bro, that's why Nikon made the D3 run at 9fps at 35mm and 11fps on DX...

The lenses are what I need ...and they do have a Zeiss feel on the glass .

Canon has been very lazy the last few years, and it has just bitten them in the ass.

The 1Ds III is nothing like a big enough update to the 1Ds II for a 3 year gap. I couldn't believe it when I saw that the 1Ds III would have a bigger LCD with exactly the same number of pixels as the 1Ds II's screen. 3 years and they can't even increase the LCD screen resolution.

The leap that Nikon has just made with the D3 totally blows away the progress that Canon has made in the last few years, plus the new lenses fill some important gaps.

What neither of them have done yet is to release a camera with flagship image quality in a body that isn't the size of a brick. A reduction in size is the most important upgrade consideration for me, so I can start having the camera with me at times other than when I'm specifically going out to take pictures. I'll stick with my 1Ds II till that happens or something overwhelmingly better in a brick size body comes out.

Am I the only one who's loving this release purely because it will make second-hand D200s even cheaper? Finally I can relegate my looking-very-long-in-the-tooth D50 into backup body status.

Nikon I love you!

Someone on another forum said they where talking to Nikon Australia today, and the D300 won't be available in Australia for 6 months? (Don't know if thats the case or not).

The expected price is going to be around $2599 (Au$).

Hoo boy. That D300, along with my long-time lust for the 200-400 f4 VR lens, is just about enough to make me switch to Nikon. Right now I am at a transitional point, and my only piece of expensive Canon glass is the 300mm f2.8L IS, so this would be the perfect time, too...

Yeah, or just through grey importers.

Seems silly that Nikon Australia would want to shoot themselves in the foot!?

Anyway, back on track, I wonder if Nikon's DX lenses (APS-C) would work on the D3 using the DX crop mode? Would make sense for all those who have invested in DX lenses.

Maybe Canon could offer EF-S compatibility on there future full framed models if they offer a selectable crop mode!

Does anyone think that Nikon made this announcement now instead of another time because of the effects of the Amazon-Canon "leak?" Are announcements like these normally made during this time of the year or do they seem a little out of place?

I think Canon pushed up the 1DsIII release a week or two to preempt Nikon. The Nikon release has been know for awhile.

Jeff makes a good point of $7K for both cameras. Nice.

I guess there's finally an incentive for Canon to keep moving forward after sitting back and doing nothing but adding incremental upgrades with the exception of the latest 1D and 40D. I hope the Nikon drives down the prices of the 1 series.

The specs of Nikons D3 camera sound good but until I see images they mean nothing. Nikon dissed its pro end users repeatedly for years. The high ISO of the Nikons has been what I call experimental only. If Nikons image is even usable over 1600 iso I'll be very surprised. The 25k ISO is a bad joke as far as image quality, that I dont even need to look at. I remember the top end iso of the D2H was absolutely useless.

It is a pity that the D300's 6-8 fps is only at 12 bit and that it slows down to 2.5 fps at 14 bits. The live view is also refreshed at only 15 Hz, it might be jerky.

I know this link has already been posted but I love the quote "...After holding the D3 and D300 for several minutes, the Digital Rebel XTi I'm using (blasphemy at a Nikon event, I know) feels like a fxxking toy—when I fired the D3 on burst mode, I felt like Arnold firing the minigun in T2 between the rapid clacking and the weight..."

I think Nikon has really raised the bar....the ability to use dx lenses as well as fx lenses on a full frame body: live view with af; a screen that at this point has unmatched resolution; and iso capabilities beyond 6400......Talk about a versatile camera and value...One can only wonder what the Flagship will bring when the 2xs is revamped!
Assuming the image performance is there, this is one compelling camera. now it will be interesting to see if the same issues that

I of course meant their anniversary, bdays being annual and such It certainly looks great on paper, but time will indeed tell whether Nikon will have the sames FF issues as Canon and if it lives up to its hype; I'm staying with Canon though...interesting times.

I applaude Nikon for releasing both of these models, it gives Canon some serious competition, and for the first time in a long time, our company will probably be buying Nikon.

Before we heap too many accolades on Nikon for the D3, it should noted that the Canon 1Ds was released in September 2002. 5 years behind to release a full frame. 5 years.

We should however, after reviewing the features of the D3, start beating on Canon for resting on their butt.

First let me preface this by saying that I love Nikon, not certain how I feel about Canon yet but I am impressed. Regardless I love photography more than either brand!

Kudos to Nikon!

If the price drops on the 1DMKIII, I want a rebate.

Nikon LCD's have always been super, wake up Canon.

As for the rest let me just say we all benifit!

Very breathless thread here?

D300 is really a class above the 40D, so it's not a direct competitor in one sense as D200 will carry on at a lower price, putting 40D in a Nikon sandwich. Now we need a 3D more than ever:

1.3x 12.4MP
7.5 fps for 20 RAW, 1000000JPG (I could care less about jpg)
100% VF
Working version of 1D III AF with other enhancements
some sealing
AF calibration
14 bit
VGA 3" LCD (1MP)
ISO 50-6400
New D light option (copy them I say)
Pop up flash 1/300 X-Sync
AF version of live view
New metering
-3EV to + 3EV metering range,
Finer spot meter
Improved colour and WB

price has to be no
...Show more

YES! I hope Canon is listening because that would be my dream camera although I'd prefer at least 8-9 fps.

Yep, no doubt about it. Canon will go out of business in six months !
The B&S forum will be filled with people selling their Canon gear to get that 51 point AF.

Geeez...get a grip people. These are very nice cameras and the competition is good for everyone. But it's unbelievable how many people in this thread are alluding to the possibility of switching systems for cameras that won't be available for a couple of months based on their specs. Ya'll gonna switch systems every six months because of minute differences in specs ? 51 AF points instead of 45, 11 fps rather 10, 12 MP rather than 10 ?
Look, Nikon has always made great stuff just like Canon. People in the forums talk as if they work for one company or the other. This is just the standard competition between two industry leaders. Folks that switch systems every time one company or the other come out with a new camera that has slightly better specs that won't make any real world difference to 99% of the photographers out there, either live in a different tax bracket than most us or are more interested in gear than photography.
Congrats to the Nikonians who finally have their FF camera. Like Yakim says, Happy Shooting !
And as I usually say, Good luck. Now lets stop worrying about what company's name is tattooed on our arm and take some pictures.
