I remember reading somewhere a few days ago, before the release of the 40D and the 1DsIII, an interview with some Canon guy (who predicted those releases) and said that the 5D Mark II was "feature ready" or something along those lines and would be in production early next year. Hopefully, after this announcement by Nikon, Canon will reevaluate those specs and give us a camera that blows Nikon away.

A 5D with 14 bit, live view, higher res LCD, weather sealing and 1-series AF for around $2500 would be MY dream camera.

Well back when nikon announced a release date for th d2 that date came and went without comment then they said "wha who huh? we didn't say that!"
Then the date was moved out twice. Instead of Jan. they were on the shelves sometime in May. So if you want to go with past experience if they say Nov. think next March

Someone on NSN claimed the D300 burst rate drops to 2.5 fps when shooting 14bit RAW, anyone else seen that officially listed?

If the D3's claims at high ISO are indeed very decent, I will consider flogging some of my Canon gear - not all - I love the 70-200L vs. the Nikkor version but high ISO shooting would give me an edge and the ability to capture photos that nobody else but another D3 owner can capture. It opens new doors to creative possibilities with low light event photography.

85 1.4 Nikkor at ISO 25600. Try doing that with a Canon!

But it remains to be seen whether that would be usable.

those nikons look great on paper. The one thing that is keeping me loyal to the canon camp are the bokeh of some of its L lenses - especially the 85/1.2 and the 135/2
But I have not done much research wrt to AF zeiss with Nikon.

Here's a source that mentions the same: http://www.digitalreview.ca/content/Nikon-D300-Digital-SLR-Camera.shtml

Scroll down to the D300 v D200 comparison and check Image Quality Settings

14-bit NEF (RAW):uncompressed or compressed RAW. Images are recorded at a bit-depth of 14 bits, producing files roughly 1.3 times larger than 12-bit files but increasing the color data recorded resulting in smoother tones. Maximum frame advance rate decreases to 2.5 fps.

Am I missing something or does the D300 have a self cleaning sensor and the D3 does not? Can only find it mentioned in the D300 specs.

?

Did I miss something or has Nikon actually shipped something?

Looking at past history, when has Nikon ever been able to ship anything WHEN they said they would?

This is all very exciting and kudos to Nikon, but I'm thinking we're going to have to draw on a bit more Nikon forebearance before we'll ever see these new cameras (or lenses) in quantity.

And hopefully they will arrive before Canon's MK IV or 50D.

Hope springs eternal.

The D3 prices indicates to me that there will be no 1D series butt kicking here.

Yeah, $500 for all those features couldn't possibly be worth it. I wonder what Canon would have charged for a FF 1DMk3? $7000? $8000? Remember their whole song and dance about FF sensors being dramatically more expensive than APS-H?

Given the fact that I only care about image quality, and not shooting speed, or the resolution of the little LCD screen, I'll take a Canon CMOS over a Sony full-frame sensor any day of the week.

You'd take a Canon sensor over a Sony without even seeing the Sony?

I always love these threads, because it brings out the apologists for comic relief. I'm a bit disappointed there aren't more this time!

I wonder how the mood is over at Canon right now? The ink is barely dry on the 1DMk3 and 40D spec sheets and Nikon has put out two clearly superior cameras, has introduced lenses to essentially eliminate the "tele gap", and has made what could be an extremely potent 14mm f/2.8 zoom that could very well eat the lunch of Canon's two recent ultrawides (14/2.8II and 16-35/2.8II). One has to wonder if, had Nikon introduced their updates first, if Canon would have even announced the 40D, or shelved it until they could hit feature parity?

How long until we see a 1DMk3n and a 50D? And what the heck will they look like? The hopeless dreamer in me is still holding out hope for IS bodies... now that would blow Nikon out of the water. Temporarily at least.

Exciting times not just for Nikon shooters, but for all of us!

Add iso 6400 expandable to 12800, and I'd totally start saving for an upgrade.

I sincerely believe that if we begin to behave like adults these forums are going to get really serious. I hope I am not offending anyone though!
I have said many times what we all know; digital is still a baby and it will take some more years till it is completely developed. I am amazed at how fast technology is going. It took almost a century for film to become state of art and it took years for film cameras to develop like they did.
Canon announced some nice products that should cater to Canon users. Nikon followed with their anouncements yesterday which is of great interest to us Nikonians. Are those cameras and lenses going to make us better photographers? You all know the answer.
If you are happy with your system that is great since you have what you need for your photography. I do not consider ethical to proclaim to the universe that your system is superior to anything else. What is superior for you could not be what fits the style of another photographer who is different from you.
Nikon has been working on a "full frame" for years. They had the technology to produce the camera but instead they tested it and waited till they were convinced it was the right time to introduce it. They perfectly knew they could be loosing to the market by not showing the camera. Same with noise; Nikon selected not to use anything that could degrade the image at high ISO. They worked and perfected the sensors, beginning with the LBCAST and then their works with the D50; I guess in combination with Sony. Did noise bothered me? Yes, although I am not a high ISO shooter.
I do not want anybody to believe that I am writing this justifying the way Nikon works and I do not want anybody to believe my comments are pretending to compare one brand with the other. That is not my style. I am convinced that a good photographer will be as good with a system as with the other, it is just a matter of semantics using what makes you comfortable.
The new cameras, as a Nikonian that I am, are great news to me but do not expect me to run and be the first one in line for any of them. I think that both new cameras are technologically advanced and have features that could help anyone to improve on his or her photography. Now it is a matter of waiting, at least for me, and see what users and reviewers have to say about them.
I also want to say, and this is very personal, that I am not interested in megapixels race and I am glad 12 megapixels is exactly what Nikon decided to stick with.
Just my humble opinions.

Just wanted to thank you guys for being happy for us guys over the road.
I am sure we will have a few early glitches like we did with the D2x and you have been experiencing lately but in general it does sound fabulous I like the liveview and the infinder level, two things I was hoping for on the D2x, the larger sensor really means nothing to me but I suspect they have done it to cut down on high iso noise.
Cheers,
Jasin.

I'm much more impressed by "strict-to-death" prohibition of getting a pictures from both cameras. 1Ds3 which is at least 1 month "younger" than D3 was given to Polish team for test shooting.

It raises my strong suspects that eithier Nikon is not ready to ship for November or (even worse) ISO 12800&25600 are just marketing BS next to P&S ISO10000...

Finally, Nikon ups the ante! Not really a threat to 1Ds III IMO because it's "only" 12 mp which probably won't even compete with the 5D II when it's announced. On the other hand Nikon has put an arrow through the armor of the 1D III, which it beats iso, speed & resolution-wise. This would seem to be a major blow to Canon in the PJ market segment.

Unfortunately, the 12 mp ceiling doesn't help Canon users hoping for some price pressure from Nikon on the 1Ds III. Canon will say half the resolution for $5K.
