Makes me happy, maybe Canon will have a 1DMkIIIn (for the sake of all that is holy, rename it already), and hopefully the 5D replacement will be a stronger competitor to the D300 (45pt focus system anyone?).
Who cares about the bodies, check out the new lenses! OK, I do care about the bodies also. Anything to kick Canon into putting out newer, better, and less expensive to compete! And doing it sooner rather than later
We should cheer the day, celebrate, and praise Nikon, then ask "What the freak took you SO long?"
D300 is their version of our 3D. It has the same AF system as the D3, sealing, live view, ISO range etc etc. 40D or pay $500 more for D300. I hope the 40D AF is a big step up from the 30D.
MR on LL quietly mentions the glass limiting performance constraints that Canon has with the current models. I am happy about the D3 but I am far more interested in the announcement of 5 new lenses. Hasn't it always been about the glass? film or digital?
The good news here is, if you like Nikon (I do) your patience has been rewarded. No reason for sour grapes on either side, we both have some really nice cameras to chose from, I just hope that Canons focus woes don't get repeated by Nikon. D3 and a pop up flash huh? What's next Nikon?

Yep now that there's a D3 it's about time for a 3D!
the D300's viewfinder is even better than the pretty good D200 viewfinder. Now at 100% coverage and 94% mag. still not as good as full frame, but to continue to make improvements on an already great VF, wow.

this looks pretty cool, but knowing the little that i know about Nikon, they still don't seem to have a camera that competes with the Canon as far as landscape photograpers go. this camera doesn't have the MP to take on the 1Ds, or the price point to take on the 5D. all these fps everyone is yapping about is cool, but i shot 90% of my photos with a tripod, MLU, and a remote. i'd have to see a HUGE improvement in image quality over my 5D to ever consider a Nikon.
Canon's sole advantage now is an affordable FF and hopefully the 5D II will carry that on, but still a pro level reasonably affordable FF with the features of the D3 is what a lot of people would die for. Ok $4999 is not cheap, but it makes the 1Ds II look poor value and given how close the 5D IQ was to the 1Ds II, the D3 should be up their too with it's 14 bit capture and new engine. I'm am sure Nikon will put FF into a D300 class body eventually.
Canon has to drop the price of the 1D III immediately by at least $600 to be competitive with the D3 IMO. Oh and the AF issues will now be fixed in record time

But yeah, the 51 AF points seem awesome...

D300 has AF calibration and 100% VF coverage.! Yikes, what doesn't it have?
Just read the specs on the new VR big guns. 4 stop VR, every lens has a shorter MFD (3-11% depending on model) than the Canons and except for the 500 weigh less too.
Nikon I guess decided to stop playing games and fight canon and you gotta admit even if your a die hard never gonna switch canon shooter this is an amazing announcement and if the camera lives up to the specs canon's got some more mk3 features to put in the 50d.
PPerfect: agreed re: desire to see price drop and AF issues' resolution...
Here's another point about which to speculate: how much do you think each company knew about each other's releases? Of course, the further out we go, the speculation "cone of likelihood" would expand to the point where it's irrelevant. But, a few months ago, weeks ago, etc? I would think that each had *some* idea...
