EOS20 - Yes, the infiltration is beginning (re: sticky here, in Canonland)...
Tim - You're right. And a "we shall overcome" attitude (rather than, "gee, methinks I'll head out and photograph something) is going to spawn countless 40D wishlists, and 50D, 1D4, and 5DII/3D threads...

The D300 looks like what all us Canon shooters have been waiting for! A pro model in a small body with a good removable battery grip, good AF, and proper weather sealing! Pretty much what everyone have been calling the "EOS 3D"
And the D300 price is only slightly higher then the 40D!!
EOS20 - that price point is really getting to me...I'm sorry, but if I need a new body, a few hundred dollars more for that inflated featureset wouldn't be a problem (no doubt assuming some performance we cannot legitimately assume)...
How about Nikons cross type sensors. 15 cross-type AF areas positioned around the centre (they operate as cross-type sensors with lenses whose maximum aperture is f/5.6 or faster). On a brighter note for Canon, the D3 buffer does not even come close to the MK III
Exactly my point, from what I converted (from the US price) It works out to be about $200 (Au$) more then the 40D, But you get pretty much a 1D series camera for that bit extra!
D300 looks awesome for a wildlife shooter. AF like that in a light magnesium
body! Nikon also has a lens Canon doesn't want to produce - 200-400 f4 VR....
I think I might go for that combo for my wildlife setup...
Still no competition for 1Ds MkIII, but details like that LCD in BOTH D300
and D3 make you think twice before spending $8K on 1Ds MkIII....
Kind of like the new Jag XKR with an old style antenna sticking on the back...
I was floored by the 40D release, but it seems like the D300 has features that I didn't even dare to dream would be implemented in the 40D.
D300 is really a class above the 40D, so it's not a direct competitor in one sense as D200 will carry on at a lower price, putting 40D in a Nikon sandwich. Now we need a 3D more than ever:
1.3x 12.4MP
7.5 fps for 20 RAW, 1000000JPG (I could care less about jpg)
100% VF
Working version of 1D III AF with other enhancements
some sealing
AF calibration
14 bit
VGA 3" LCD (1MP)
ISO 50-6400
New D light option (copy them I say)
Pop up flash 1/300 X-Sync
AF version of live view
New metering
-3EV to + 3EV metering range,
Finer spot meter
Improved colour and WB
price has to be no more than $1999.
5D II should have the same specs (no pop up flash), but be 16.4MP FF for $2999
D300 pricing is amazing for what it offers. I'm seriously looking at this rather than a 40D unless we hear whispers of a 3D.
I know Canon is tight lipped about future stuff, but they better leak something or they might be in a bit of trouble. Maybe they will update the 40D LCD, and Liveview before they get shipped (ok, that's asking a bit much).

Yeah, it's not a direct competitor, but it seems to me they're both going after the same target audience.

Same here. I thought I'd be getting a 40D (there have been rumours of it landing in stores in Hong Kong before the end of Sept) but the release of the D300 is giving me pause. If it lives up to its specs...
I might be off the subject but I cannot help to think the next shocker should be from SONY. Maybe a FF Alpha and 1K cheaper than 5D. Oh, what a sweet world.
I have waited long enough for the 40D release to make my decision, now I've made it deposited the check & 40D pre-ordered & paid for!!!
I decided not to go FF 3 months ago after a lot of contemplation so no regrets here but taking nothing from what Nikon have released they do look spectacular!!
p.s. If everyone would like to cancel their pre-orders I will be happy to get my 40D sooner

Maybe now Canon will put the 16 bit A/D with a 16 bit path in the 5DII. I want more IQ, less fps (1 fps is plenty fast enough). Give us the GPS and the micro adjustment for the lens also. Let the PJ have the 1D and the D3

A fantastic announcement from Nikon. Not only two great cameras and FF. But also many new lenses. And 3 super-tele lenses with VR.
The next year will be really interesting. And for the first time with DSLR, Canon has some really serious competition. That's very good
I'd just like to point out that I, a Canon user started main release thread, just for the irony. While I salute Nikon, my heart truly remains with Canon.
Does anyone think that Nikon made this announcement now instead of another time because of the effects of the Amazon-Canon "leak?" Are announcements like these normally made during this time of the year or do they seem a little out of place?
