I'll be waiting to read the reviews, but the current plan is to look at replacing my 350D with a 40D early in the new year. While a 30D owner might have difficulty justifying an upgrade, in my opinion the 40D has major advantages over the 350D, in areas that I personally have found quite limiting.

If you already own a crop frame camera there is zero reason to buy another. Wait until you can afford a full frame body.
Right on!!! I'm keeping my beloved 30D until the 5D "upgrade" comes along. Then I'll decide whether I want the "upgrade", or get the cheaper "original" version. There's no 40D in my future!
I'd think it would save them support/service costs, as it's very simple with live view to test and correct focus. It would also save them the endless front/back focus complaints on the internet.
You can't do any harm with the micro focus adjustment on the III, and its very easy to reset the offset to 0 if needed.

I can't say i've seen the new grip anywhere yet to be honest.
Although for what the official grips cost I can't say I see the need for one personally. I can quite happily and comfortably shoot portrait with the main grip and considering the number of shots one can reel off on a single charge without excessive screen use on recent bodies you're on one long shoot to need to even change batteries these days. I've shot 1000 on a single charge with a 350D (supposedly a lower juice battery vs the BP511) before now and that was at an airshow where servo AF was getting some heavy stick.
Put it this way, i'd have a grip if you gave one to me but i'd not pay the kind of cash they want for one....Show more →
I'd take the extra only because when out on a full day shoot of equine eventing I've found my batteries run down faster in AI Servo and I don't get the same number of shots otherwise I have got to agree with you.

You've nailed it. It's a pretty ho-hum release. If there had not been so many people whining for a 40D for so long Canon might have released a decent upgrade.., like a 3D with 45 point AF. Stepping from 5fps to 6.5fps isn't even close to noteworthy.
I still have a 10D and 30D and a 5D. There won't be a 40D for me. I don't play the corporate carrot game.
If you want 45 point AF you should just pony up and buy a 1-series.

I believe the 40D will be more attractive to people who don't already own a 20/30D/XTi yadda-yadda...
because...
8mp - 10mp is barely different in end product.
5fps - 6.5fps ...ditto, barely different.
Liveview? How often would you really use that?
Better AF? Possibly, but I'd be surprised to hear it was significantly better.
I'd say the 40D is a little better than the 20D to 30D upgrade that occurred a while back, and yes, some of the features of this new body are very welcomed but not very 'upgrade material'. What I do like is that it's maintained a small body and has a MkIII's baby brother appeal....Show more →
I am thinking it is finally time to upgrade from my 300D
I've been working at a local shop this summer. For kicks, today I looked in the computers to see if we have an entry for the 40D. Sure enough, we did, and it was listed at $1230. I don't know how long that price will stay, but I do know that if I place my order now, that is the price I pay. Also, I know that the list is not very long at this point. I've already convinced myself that the next camera I'm getting is the 5D, but I bet I could make a nice little profit if I order one now and get one from the first shipment, and sell it while it's hot. The only thing thats stopping me from doing it is that I go away to college in a week.
Oh well, just thought you guys would like to know. Oh, by the way...our list price for the 30D? $1230.

if it's like the 20D/30D, nope, you gotta get the expensive TCsomething remotes that plug in. A pocketwizard is probably just as convenient. That's one big advantage of the XT/XTi - wireless remote option is cheap.
The 40D uses the following remote controls:
TC-80N3 Timer Remote Controller
RS-80N3 Remote Switch
LC-5 Wireless Controller
How can you compare a $1300 camera to what will likely be a $3000 camera? Different tools. For sports or nature the 40D looks amazing for a non-pro. Not everyone wants full frame.

40D on the way now selling 300D & lenses & a work mate is interested in buying.
He is looking at changing from film & has a 550EX that he will not be wanting...
I am under pressure taking gear in tomorrow & am unsure if I should consider doing a deal to reduce price on my gear as a trade off for the Flash (I have made no commitment at the moment).
550EX & 40D how will they pair up...Is it a good flash?? All happening & need some help.
Experienced with 550EX please help. Advise GREATLY Appreciated
Cheers

Am I to assume the BG-E2 will fit on the 40D, since the new grip will fit on all of the older cameras?
Mike
Yes, The 40D is compatible with both the BE-E2 and BG-E2n grips.
As far as I'm aware, the BG-E2n is the same as the BG-E2, But has dust and moister sealing around the battery door, and where it connects to the camera. And from the pics there seems to be a small pin that makes the connection to the camera a bit more secure.
OH Have you all seen the new Nikon models on DPR yet!? Full framed D3, and a D300 model!!
I have a 40D body only on pre-order with Henry's here in Toronto and to my surprise the price is only 1399.99 CAD.That's certainly a nice change in comparison to the US pricing.
Hopefully the price on the 40D will drop faster once the D300 is released. I would like to see a price war between Canon and Nikon!! If the 40D dropped to the price of the 30D (Without the rebates and heavy discounting) that would be great.
But if the past is anything to go by, It will take Nikon along time to keep up with the demand (Just like the release of the D200).
I like the grip of D300 which doesn't have a thing going into the camera battery compartment like the 40D. It is easier to carry when u are not using and also you won't lose your battery door.
