I agree with alfarmer. Most of the hype on this new body is because it's, well... new!
IF the AF is indeed much better (20d/30d off center points really do suck) then I could see some reasoning in an upgrade. Same goes for alot of the other features depending on your personal wants/needs. I believe most of the real world differences in all the 30-40d upgrades will be marginal but I really hope not.
But selling a 30D to get a 40D (to me) makes no sense. /me puts on FLAME SUIT!

Just as the 1Ds Mk III upgrade, there is no single deal closer with the 40D.
However, the sum of all the upgrades makes the 40D very compelling. At least to me it does. It's the bigger buffer and the editable picture styles and the 3 custom settings on the mode dial and the high ISO performance and the resolution upgrade (especially over my 10D) and the framerate and the live view and the quieter shutter and... Well, you get the point. I plan to get one in half a year or so.

Am I to assume the BG-E2 will fit on the 40D, since the new grip will fit on all of the older cameras?
Mike
I believe thats the case, yes. Just obviously it won't have the weather sealing that the E2N provides, nor the extra AF-ON button I believe the new grip has.
Just because Canon introduces a new camera it doesn't mean they expect every one of their existing customers to buy one. They introduce new models with new features to keep up with the market. Would you rather they just stick with the 10D? At some point they have to improve their models.
I currently have a 10D. I never seriously considered the 20D. I thought about getting the 30D or perhaps a 5D, I just had other things to spend my money on. Now with the 40D I see a significant improvement over my existing camera so I'm now more likely to upgrade.
So alfamer, why do you feel that when Canon introduces a new 5D that you have to buy it and why are you concerned that it'll be incremental and thus you'll be getting ripped off by Canon? If the improvements in the new one aren't significant in your opinion, why buy it? Can't you compare the specs for yourself and see whether it's worth it for you to buy it? And even if it isn't, can't you see how people that don't have a comparable camera may still be excited about the new model and want to buy it?
In general I don't think buying the new version of whatever I have to be worthwhile. I think it's best to wait a few generations, until the upgrade is significant. But that doesn't mean I can't see the excitement over the new releases in the meantime. It's good to see Canon improving their cameras and remaining competitive. That means when I'm ready to buy my next camera, they'll have good offerings and I won't feel compelled to switch to a Nikon and sell off all my Canon lenses.
Well spoken Keith. I doubt that you and I will sway anyone on this or similar forums.
There is always a frantic running about and hand wringing over new models.
Human nature and the slavish way we have been trained to respond to hype and greed, just keeps it all in a whirl.

Can't find the Canon 55-250IS on either Amazon or Adorama. They must have taken them down.
I don't think this lens ever made it on to Amazon. It's stated for a near future release date and not at the same time as the 40D. Another thing that isn't up but should be is the BG-E2N.
I can't say i've seen the new grip anywhere yet to be honest.
Although for what the official grips cost I can't say I see the need for one personally. I can quite happily and comfortably shoot portrait with the main grip and considering the number of shots one can reel off on a single charge without excessive screen use on recent bodies you're on one long shoot to need to even change batteries these days. I've shot 1000 on a single charge with a 350D (supposedly a lower juice battery vs the BP511) before now and that was at an airshow where servo AF was getting some heavy stick.
Put it this way, i'd have a grip if you gave one to me but i'd not pay the kind of cash they want for one.

I understand it's an upgrade from the 20D, I just don't see the big jump from the 30D.
Lower noise? How do we know that?
sRAW? Is that significant?
Higher frame rate? I must've read a different spec sheet.
Live view? Meh.
Silent shutter? The 30D was loud?
Viewfinder update? Missed that one in the spec sheet too. I really need to get my info. from somewhere else it seems. (NOT sarcasm! I really mean my source seems to suck.)
Bigger LCD? I thought it was the same size? And nobody seemed to care about the bigger LCD on the 30D...
ISO always on? Could do that with a 30D firmware update.
New menu system? LoL, um, okay...
Digic III and 10MP? That's the only real upgrade as far as I can tell.
Deeper buffer? Of course it's bigger -- because of 10MP. Same number of pictures stored.
So what you all seem to be saying is the 30D was a desperate, revenue-generating release -- as was the MkIIN, apparently. But at least they were honest by marking that an "N" instead of giving it a new model number.
So the lesson is to never buy an in-between model from Canon. How does one know which products are tweeners if they don't apply "N" or something?
You've nailed it. It's a pretty ho-hum release. If there had not been so many people whining for a 40D for so long Canon might have released a decent upgrade.., like a 3D with 45 point AF. Stepping from 5fps to 6.5fps isn't even close to noteworthy.
I still have a 10D and 30D and a 5D. There won't be a 40D for me. I don't play the corporate carrot game.

I have a question. I have a remote control (Canon RC1) that I use with my XTi and like it very much. Is this compatible with the 40D?
If not, is there a wireless trigger similar to the RC1 that will work with the 40D?
I'm in the same boat. I'm told it didn't work with the 30D and there was no wireless RC for the 20D/30D as it didn't have the receiver for it (somewhat bizarrely given the 350D and 400D have it). No full accessory sheet i've seen yet for the 40D so can't say for sure, but i'm not overly hopeful.

if it's like the 20D/30D, nope, you gotta get the expensive TCsomething remotes that plug in. A pocketwizard is probably just as convenient. That's one big advantage of the XT/XTi - wireless remote option is cheap.
On the remote situation i've checked as the US Canon site has accessories list now. RC1 isn't supported, only wireless option is the hideously expensive LC-5 unit.

Perhaps I should know this already; does the 40D have the AF micro-adjustment feature? That would be greatly welcomed by me.
No they haven't. And to be honest I can't really blame them, would potentially be a support nightmare in the making if people who don't know what they're doing start fiddling.
