Guys time to cancel your 40D pre-order!!!! Wait for the review from both cameras before making another camera purchase. Most of us with too much investment on Canon lenses, but hey let Canon knows that u are thinking of Nikon and hold off your purchase.

Yes, The 40D is compatible with both the BE-E2 and BG-E2n grips.

As far as I'm aware, the BG-E2n is the same as the BG-E2, But has dust and moister sealing around the battery door, and where it connects to the camera. And from the pics there seems to be a small pin that makes the connection to the camera a bit more secure.

OH Have you all seen the new Nikon models on DPR yet!? Full framed D3, and a D300 model!!

From the review:
"Nikon Scene Recognition System, which uses the acclaimed Nikon 1005-pixel RGB colour sensor modified to recognise subjects’ shape and position before the image is captured. This also aids the new 51-Point Autofocus system in tracking subjects by their colour, while enhancing the accuracy of exposure and white balance metering."
But the specs say "TLL phase-difference AF with 51 focus areas (15 cross-type sensors)". Interesting how 51 pts becomes 15 cross sensors that make up 51 'focus areas'.

I would have liked to see canon up the 9 pt autofocus for the 40D (and up the number of pixels in the LCD), but I guess that $500 price difference will likely keep Canon in the prosumer market (all the people who want to be just a little more 'pro' than a XTi, while the Nikon seems to be shooting a little higher.

However, another interesting note about the Nikon, the AF can keep the mirror up and do AF via software (like a point and shoot). I'm assuming that this is something canon could implement in firmware. It would certainly reduce the feature set of the nikon.

Other then that, they seem to be pretty much the same camera (I don't really think the 2MP is all that big of a deal). Can't wait to see some hands on reviews of the 40d vs the d300

We are all saying wow Canon has improved on the AF with the 40D, Well Nikon has made a huge improvement with the D300, from 11pt AF to 51 Pt AF in the D300 with 15 cross type sensors!

I guess we will be seeing a EOS 3D sometime soon!

It's interesting that Nikon had the guts to put full-fledged pro AF and weathersealing on the D300, in addition to ISO 6400. Things that make you go "hmmmm".

At least Nikon can design a good battery grip!

D300 also gets a 100% viewfinder!

If Nikon can do it on a APS-C model, Why Can't Canon??

On another note; For all the Australian members, Digital camera warehouse have the 40D for $1799:

Wow, that's great news that Nikon is raising the bar so high. If Canon doesn't already have the 5D MkII specs finalized, I think this will give them the incentive to make it a knock out camera. I'm going to get a 40D, a nice upgrade from my XT, and hopefully the next 5D will be so nice I'll get one of those too.

I'm sticking with Canon and have the 40D on preorder. BUT how many of us are now wondering if Canon is going to speed up the release of the 50D. ...wow, how things change so fast. Seriously, people have now got to be thinking about passing on the 40 and just waiting for the 50D.

We could see Canon follow the 12 month update cycle they took with the D60-10D replacement with the 40D-50D.

Anyone here, who looked the D300 like nothing special, as in not being a threat? and still has some 40D hype in them?

I guess they will have little choice now, if they keep sticking to the 18 month cycle, Nikon will stay ahead for a while! Also I like Nikon's choices of merging the specs between the pro and consumer cameras. For me the D300 (if the IQ follows - and I am sur it will) will be a great pro Camera. In fact I think the D3+D300 is a dream combo.

I was really excited when the 40D was announced, but now...

I think that unless my 10D breaks down, I'll be waiting for the 50D or whatever Canon does next.

Does any one know if the 40D will have the AF adjustment available in the 1D MK III?

Man... No AF adjustment!? That’s software feature! What would it cost to have it?! I hope the 40D focus dead-on with all my lenses or else I will move camp! Consider this a warning Canon!!! No point on having “L” lenses good high ISO performance if one can’t focus!!!

True but from what I hear out of Canon is that micro adjustment is a short term feature where calibration is still the ultimate solution.

AF adjustment on the Mark 3 is a -20 to +20 adjustment on a per lens basis. Any prime that needs adjusting further than +8 or -8 needs really does need a calibration session with Canon, zooms should really be calibrated at Canon since the micro adjustment will vary with focal length anyway. Other than a short term solution, in my opinion this is a pointless feature.

Isn't though alot of backfocusing issues more down to inferior AF picking up the wrong thing rather than the lens being 'out' per se?
