Nice to see the usual market forces at work though. US price with Amazon is $1299 yet the UK body-only price seems to be £899. That means its 'only' about £240 more in the UK. Robbing b*****ds!
You should see the one in our helicopter (Canon). Can't remember what the zoom ratio is but it goes to 1,000mm plus a doubler... I think the maximum aperture is F1.7 but I can't recall.

Is it in Yodabashi's or Bic Camera yet?
I'll be in Osaka for two weeks from Thursday.
Nope, it will not be in any of those shops until it is shipped. What you can do is to go to the Canon showroom. I think they have one in Osaka around Umeda area. You should be able to get your hands on more than just the 40D, they should also have 1Ds3 there as well. Did not see the 1Ds3 today since it was borrowed for the press conference.
Unfortunately I will probably miss out while I'm there because I'm coming home on the 4th. If I get a chance though, I'll go and have a look. Galbraith is predicting that it will go on sale "early September" but I can't imagine it will be that early.
Regarding the improved AF: Will the 40 D be a credible camera for shooting birds in flight or fast action sports, or does one still need a 1D series camera for those applications? I find my 20 D to be way too slow in AI Servo mode. Will the 40 D be a big enough improvement to make a significant difference?

I would assume the focus to be better than before but not 1 series better.
The most amazing thing is that the leaked pictures were real :-)
In terms of Amazon, even if Canon was planning on releasing the news today, Amazon surely jumped the gun. Deliberate? Collusion? Maybe. It sure got the buzz going.
Does anyone understand the image canon has showing the sensors?

I highly doubt it, I think for fast action AI servo you will probably always need a 1 series.
