Incredible bang for the buck all things considered. I'm definitely in. I like to take shots at my college's hockey games and both my Canons are 3fps. 6.5 fps and the new af will be most welcome.
Well if Canon's Press Release says ~$1299 I would assume so. On the other hand the 30Ds could gret obscenly cheap and become a great option for beginners as the stocks are being ermptied. You are right, the close price is a little strange.
From what I understand, the only real difference between the two grips is the new "N" version has dust and weather sealing on the battery door.
From Canon Australia's press release:
Battery Grip BG-E2N accommodates an additional BP-511A battery pack for extended shooting time without re-charging. The BG-E2N also has increased dust and water-resistance on the battery compartment's cover for added durability.

Everyone's hyped about the 40D, but they JUST came out with the 30D for goodness sakes! Why the heck do they need a 40D? What the heck are Canon thinking? Makes absolutely no sense to me, so hopefully someone can shed light on this confusing product announcement...
And why not? The 30D was such a marginal update of the 20D that it really didn't deserve a new product number, it was obvious that Canon was just threading the water to keep afloat. The 40D on the other hand represents a REAL update.
My feeling is the 40D is really an up-grade from the 20D, the 30D was just a re-number 20D with some minor added features, so it is really 3 years old. I don't think to many up-graded from the 20D to 30D just for the added features, I know I didn't. This time you'll have a lot of 20D people getting a 40D.

the 30D is like the 1D Mark II N, was an upgrade for the 1D Mark II. Same camera, just has a small upgrade like the larger LCD.
With Nikon already on the market with a 10.1MP prosumer body, it was in their best interest to get the body out ASAP.
20D and 30D are essentially the same camera. 30D and 40D are not. Its all competition.
Nobody NEEDs the 40D, they DEMAND it. And what the market demands is what the manufacturers provide...
