How many AF points and Xtype AF points does a 1 series camera have? How many does a 30D have? Don't you think there is room to add a few more AF points of both types, to the 30D replacement and still not 'compete' with the 1 series?

While I have no idea what will be on the 30D replacement, I think Canon would be ill advised not to make some significant improvements in some of the key features that make a good camera a good camera... AF would be one place I think they could easily make some improvements... regardless of how mature technology is.

do we really need more AF points in xxD camera? I believe more people will be more happy with better Al Servo tracking/more precise and faster center sensor. Sooner or later most of us end up using only the center point...

I don't think more AF points are needed, though the 6 "invisible" AF points on the 5D are useful for tracking small birds. What might be useful would be some cross-type sensors away from the center point. We don't always frame our subjects exactly in the center.

All I need is f/4.0 sensitive triple precision central cross sensor and clean ISO 1600 (like 1D mkIII). Big viewfinder would be nice (how about 100% coverage). I am assuming that 10 MPixels and improved dust shaker are coming.

Perhaps we don't need more AF points... but more high precision points would be very useful. Say 5 high precision points, one center and four more on the outskirts... and I mean high precision with all lenses, not just f2.8 or better... Better AI Servo would be welcome as well... At least with more high precision points, you could have a easier time composing a shot when the main subject was not dead center. (and not have to focus and re-compose)

anyway, my original point was that there are many ways Canon could improve the 30D significantly without having to come up with all new technology and/or without having to push the envelope of what's possible... All they'd have to do is convince the bean counters that a significant upgrade was needed to stay ahead of the competitors... and that it would not harm the bottom line by taking away sales from the higher end lineup....

DRAGUI99,

Unfortunately, I think it is safe to say that "your shop" knows Butkis.

I don't know if anybody already mentionned it but the 40D is announced in "Chassuer d'images" current issue (it's a French magazine).

Announced? as in a full description and with specs that Canon has given?

"Announced? as in a full description and with specs that Canon has given? "

No. "announced" as in speculation. The 30D will probably be replaced soon. At this point it's the most likely body in the lineup to be replaced. August or September is more likely. This almost month long thread and the rumor that started it will probably be wrong again.
And when are people going to stop lending credence to what some chump from their camera store or some asst. manager at Samys tells them ? These people know less than we do, they're just trying to impress you with their "inside knowledge".

Sorry I didn't see it. But anyway, it's an interesting post nevertheless. Canon really should (although I don't believe it will), throw in a major upgrade or two (weather sealing, better AF, improved body...) to stay in the game. D200 is already better than what's 40D, according to the specs going to be (featurewise), not to mention the D300 which is supposed to be announced in september.

I also heard that Pentax is going to release a K10D replacement by the end of the year. I don't know if its true or just another rumour though.....

I think its interesting b/c most people are wanting to compare to the D200 forgetting that Nikon will need to upgrade soon. However I don't think an improved body is necessary, the 30D body is solid enough and I think bigger would be detrimental to the 40D. I think better AF would have to happen to exceed the 400D, but maybe that is just me. So weather sealing would be a the remaining question and that is feasible if the D300 really will have it. But we will see.
