^Lovely shot. Just a bit of a purple/magenta tint to the head feathers?

You obviously have much better eyes than me if you can manual focus something like that though :P

One from the other night that some of my MF Nikkor friends will recognize.

^ WOW John, I know it's the photographer and not the gear, but I love the output of this lens. Great work.

Thanks Leighton - my humble self tends to think it's the gear (this feeds my lens acquisition syndrome nicely). There are some really nice MF non-Nikkors out there, though they certainly demand a high price. Sadly, this lens has taken over from my 105/2.5 AIS which I still like, but the 90/3.5 CV just works better for me when carrying around a bag of primes (it's smaller, shorter, lighter, and focuses much closer than the 105/2.5 - I just wish it was a 100mm f/3.5 instead . . .).

Voiglander sounds like a hiking shoe brand to me, but the images are anything but old shoe. I guess the gear geeks would use the term micro contrast to describe the fine detail in the pano. Quite amazing how you can make out fine detail in the near monochrome mountain range.

The prices these Voiglanders demand will keep my 105/2.5 safely in my gear bag, though.

The reasons I found the 90/3.5 CV to be an alternative to my 105/2.5 are:
- Size/length (48.2mm vs. 69.5 mm)
- MFD (0.5m vs. 1m)
- Weight (320 g vs. 435g) - though this does not include a lens hood, which I have on it.
- Sharper at MFD
- Sharper at infinity (especially in the corners)
- Easier to focus accurately at near distances with the focus confirmation dot for candids
- Lower CA
- Better flare resistance
- Has a built-in CPU

What I don't like about the 90/3.5 relative to the 105/2.5:
- Its only 90mm
- It's only f/3.5
- Does not have the built-in lens hood (I love this feature)
- It's about 5x more expensive and is discontinued
- It's not a Nikkor

I place a lot on size/weight and IQ since I tend to travel with my MF gear both on airplane trips, on hikes, and up mountains.

The 105/2.5 is not going anywhere anytime soon however . . .

Thanks Peter -

Voigtlander has some not so great lenses too . . . . like their 20/3.5 which I've not found a copy that I liked and their new 28/2.8 which does not have across the frame sharpness from what I've seen in samples and reviews.

The 90/3.5 is an outstanding lens in just about all regards.
The 180/4 is a very very good lens - it's main points of goodness are compactness/weight (compared to my 200/4), even-ness of IQ across the whole frame, and close focusing capability.

Some lenses seem to take sharpening much better than others - not sure why that is - the 90/3.5 and 180/4 certainly do sharpen well. Time will tell if I'm willing to keep the 180/4 due to it's price. I sold my 80-200/2.8AFS to afford the 180/4.

John

Ronny, terrific shots to start off with. Did you do any split toning on these ? Any hints into the secret sauce ?

Some fave shots from the 1st May. Raw files converted on Phase One Capture 7 but no adjustments, no ps, no cropping. Cheers.
