Really enjoying the great photos and commentary in this thread. I'm a beginner but thought the following might be interesting to some.
Last Friday I tried some photos around Hong Kong Harbor with a D200 and 18-70 with and without a circular polarizer. This one cost around US$ 50 which I think is on the low-end. Anyway, the first shot is without the CPL and no post-processing other than resizing. http://hkgharry.dyndns.org:8000/share/fred_miranda/the_harbor_without_cpl.jpg
Next, the same but with a CPL. http://hkgharry.dyndns.org:8000/share/fred_miranda/the_harbor_with_cpl.jpg
Finally, with CPL and some processing and a little cropping.
I tried working on the image taken without the CPL but liked what I could get from the CPL better. Exif data should be in the photos if you're interested.
I welcome any suggestions about CPL usage or otherwise improving these photos. Thanks.
hkgharry, thats what I'm talking about. The third one has some good pop. Its gone from (dare I say) a point-and-shoot image to a well developed and nice image.

OK - I'll play. These contrails hung around for almost an hour; the air was very still and it was virtually silent in our backyard during that time. Unnervingly eerie!

This is a fine shot. The black and white is perfect for the subject matter amd the tight crop was a great choice ... and I love the flag. Very nice.
