Lucky Oasis Bill if they are rare around where he lives.
A mating pair can keep a whole suburb awake for weeks!!
Of more interest, they fly into the Sydney region from Kalimantan in Borneo where the female will almost invariably lay in the nest of a native Currawong.
The chick is raised by its foster parents as a carnivore till one day it flys all the way back to Kalimantan where it not only becomes a vegetarian it will set up home in a tree not more than 400 yards away from where its mother roosts.
There is a lot we dont know about genetic imprinting or why our own children invariably grow up with our worst traits, no matter how much we try
Thanks Tim, That is interesting. When I said they were rare, I knew where they were from Borneo, and "stole" nests, but after that I had no idea they went home etc.... I had a pair of Channel billed Cuckoos here too. I only got some OOF shots but they were amazing looking birds, and the loudest birds I've ever heard. I'll put the pics up here when I find them.
