If you want to capture an image, it's a bit more difficult. But probably a lot cheaper than the hospital bill when you get hit by lightning. Try the link for a way to do lightning. http://www.lightningtrigger.com/

At night it's fairly easy but becomes more difficult during the day due to the short exposure times.
For these I just use a cable release and tripod and set the exposure to 'bulb', ISO 200-400 & f5.6-f10 depending on the intensity of the lightning and how much cloud detail I want to capture. So bascially it's just a matter a pressing and locking the cable release (so the shutter stays open), wait for a flash and then release the cable release to close the shutter. However once you start to get more ambient light (eg. dawn) exposures become a bit more problematic and you more or less have to predict when the lightning will strike unless you have a lightning trigger or something similar.
