There was never any AF version, actually, which I just recently learned. So, if you see an autofocus 85/1.4, you can be certain it's the D version.
I just tried out the 1.4 again yesterday after a private photography lesson, and there is something about it that I'm not sure would work for me. I think the depth of field might be too small on FX for what I do, which is mostly street right now. I like being up close, and if most of what I shoot is out of focus, that wouldn't work so well. That and the 85/1.8 AF has been terrific, and fixing what isn't broken is sometimes a risky idea.
Of course, the 1.4 is a magical lens in general, and I might yet get one someday .
Hehe, it is the Af-D version yes I had the 85 1.8, but when a friend wanted to get my almost new 85 1.8 without me taking much of a hit on the price, and I got a nice offer on a new 85 1.4, I had to get it. It is a bit big, but for a fast 85 it is not very bad, the 85 1.2 L is definitaly much bigger! For street I mostly use my Sigma 50 1.4, but both this one and the last one I posted are 85-material!
You should try the 35 1.4 AI-S luminosity! Great for street closeups really!
Well the dof is like .25cm from 2 feet so....
It's plenty sharp for me but I'm not a pixel peeper. The shots are black/white point set in NX2 with a slight sharpen in Nik......
Taken with a Nikon F4e. No photo shopping, no cropping. Scanned with a Nikon LS40 and Silverfast Ai 6. The original scans are awesome...I have to limit the size...
