"After hearing many rumors today and last couple of days I finally called Canon and it is a fact, new Mark III 1.0.9 firmware is coming out end of July. They did say - you can send the camera in to get it installed earlier however that is the only way you can get it until the end of the month once it becomes available online.
I was told it addresses:
LCD Sharpness
AF/AI Servo
and Languages."
This was from a SS member. You have the option of sending it to NJ or CA or wait till end of month...which is what i'll be doing.
I just recieved my camera back from NJ. The work order says "ELectrical Adjustments were carried out on the optical assembly. Other electrical adjustments inspection and cleaning were also carried out. firmware was upgraded.".
I'll have to report back later on how it performs. Right out of the box the screen looks 100% better. I can't understand how they would have shipped these in the begining with a soft screen?
That wiith onen exception, the firmware did not correct the issues.
He has no also shot a camera purchased in Europe which had the firmware installed and is experiencing the same issues as with the three previous cameras he shot.
Does anyone have any expierience shooting the MKIII in low artificial light?
I just received my MKIII and I have been reading as much as possible to try and set up the CFn's but if anyone has further suggestions for a base point to start I would appreiciate them.
I will be shooting a Sprint Car Race this Saturday night.
I'd love to get some decent shots to compare them to what I have been getting from my MKII in these tough conditions.
I'm a bit worried about the AF issue as I haven't had the time to really test the body to see if I'm a "Lucky One" !
Those CFn IV settings worry me a bit! Hope I get them close
To my surprise the B&H website shows that the 1D MK3 is in stock. This is the first time I saw this on their website.
I will not purchase one until Canon sorts out the AF problems but anyone who is interested and quick enough may be able to get one.
I did not think it would last too long, but I could have ordered it if I wanted to. It said "In Stock" at least for 10-15 minutes after I posted.

Yep - sure was. I called to order in case there were issues with the web status. I was starting to think I would be starting the fall season with my two gray-haired MkIIs. I really need two MkIIIs but I'm not that brave. I'll gamble on this first one and if it works then I'll queue up for another one in a future batch.
I have events starting next weekend so I'll know soon enough if this new camera deserves a spot in my bag next to the MkII.
Has anyone had problems after the firmware update? My focusing in al-servo seems to have gotten more i'ffy' afterwards.
I called canon and he asked if I was using all focal points rather than one to track action and I have been using all., he said that many people are complaining , but Canon has not confirmed any problems and that the customers need to really learn the camera...soo, I plan to try another action shoot (using his suggesstion )before assuming it is the camera and if I still have no luck, then this baby is going in for repair.
I forgot to add that he said the firmware made the tracking more sensitive..seems like it was already senstive before ..

picked up a 1D Mark III 2 weeks ago and did a shoot with it last week. The shoot was a night shoot. When I looked at the shots later, I noticed a red dot on the images in the same place.
After reading about this, I did some tests:
low ISO 1/100 shutter: 0 red dots
high ISO 1600 1/100 shutter: 1 red dot
high ISO 1600 2 sec shutter: 19 red dots!!!!
Checked with the dead pixel app referenced in the forus.
I shoot a lot of weddings, typically high ISO with slow-ish shutterspeeds. The low light focus ability was one of the main selling points for me.
its probably too late to return to the store, but I guess I need to know if this is "normal" and what Canon typically does to fix this kind of thing.
Kind of pissed off that a $4500 camera needs fixes so soon, but thats the Canon QA thing...
My first Mark 3 had a single hot pixel visible at ISO 1600 and above and given I shoot alot at this ISO and above this was just another reason to return it. If you shoot routinely at high ISO I would suggest sending it back to Canon for service under warranty.
