I'm having issues with the AF with a 70-200L IS. About every other photo I have taken seems to be off (images out of focus). I tried messing around with the calibration settings (front and back focus) for my 70-200L IS and just can't seem to find the "sweet spot". I've tried other L lenses and don't have any AF issues. I intially thought the issue was the lens, but I tried it on a 5D and 1D Mark IIn and could not reproduce the problem. Anyone else out there having AF issue with certain lenses?

Well...I just got back from Fed Ex. I decided to send the 1DM3 back to the dealer. He is going to talk to Canon to see what they can do for me.

BTW, it was not a battery issue. I got a second battery from Tallyn's and charged that one up too. Same results. I'm convinced that the problem was related to the mirror assembly or associated electronics.

So back to the dealer it goes...

Thanks to all who responded.

I tried three batteries total, removed/replaced the memory battery (voltage was good), multiple CF and SD/SDHC combinations and numerous lenses.

A week worth of shooting with several lenses worked flawlessly, but the first time with the 1.4x II TC is when things went awry. I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it or not, but nothing worked after that.

Irvine should have my body Monday morning, so we'll see what they can do for me.

If you hold the AF button in, it will switch from One-shot to Al Servo or from Al Servo to one-shot. Page 168.

Unfortunately, this is not true. This does not refer to the AF button, but rather the AF Stop Button. I would like to see Canon make this applicable to the AF button though.

Yes, I did the same thing. I also removed the memory battery and left the camera off for over an hour before reinserting it. I wonder if there is any way that certain lenses or TC's are interfering with the mirror. All I know is that the next one I get, I'm going to try a couple of shots without any lens before attaching a lens.

Canon must know by now what is causing the problem. Maybe you can prod Irvine and get to the bottom of the problem.

Well I just shot a few hundred shots got the Error 99 and turned on off after re-seating the battery. I was doing a lot of lens changes so maybe that had something to do with it. I will use my spare battery for the next shoot to see if that makes a difference. But it really was only a 10" interruption in shooting and didn/\'t happen again.

I could swear we read something about an issue with the 70-200/2.8L and using center-point focus with the MkIII. It's either in this thread, or in the 'Master' thread.

It's in the manual. Page 85. It only applies when using an extender.

The reference to this earlier in the thread omitted the part about the extender, which made it sound like a bigger deal than it actually is.

It only applies to the 70-200 f/2.8L, not the IS version. And it's not new with the Mark III; it was true of previous bodies with that lens also.

Mine is 503615, and has a build date of April 07; zero problems so far. What are the build dates of the 51 series bodies? Since mine is April 07, they must have been making an awful lot of them in April and May.

I really don't think the serial numbers are going to determine if a particular batch was faulty or not. I believe it is random in nature. I do wonder however, how many have been tested at the factory prior to shipment. I also wonder what Canon is doing to correct the problem.

Canon is so tight-lipped about their products and support issues, we may never know what the issues are/were with the M3. Let's just hope they find a fix so that future shipments will be trouble free. As you can quite well imagine, there is nothing worse than to wait three months for a camera and finally get it in your hands and it doesn't work.

Now I am back waiting again.

Mine is 5011xx and came from Adorama.

It was the 300mm 2.8 IS with the 1.4x II TC that I mounted when the errors started.

I could swear we read something about an issue with the 70-200/2.8L and using center-point focus with the MkIII. It's either in this thread, or in the 'Master' thread.

I encountered no issues with the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS while shooting with it.
