Hours ago I took delivery on a brand new 1D Mark III and after setting up the camera I decided to take my first photograph. Click...ERROR 99
The error occurs with or without a lens attached, leading me to believe this is not a contact problem at all. I removed all batteries, including the internal memory battery, reinstalled everything and pressed the shutter...ERROR 99.
So now what should I do:
(1) Send it to Canon for repair?
(2) Wait for another one from my dealer?
(3) Just return the dang thing.

Suggestions? Comments?
How many Mark III's out there have this problem?
Alan
Take out the battery and the memory retention battery for about 30 minutes and try it again. i've read somewhere that that helped out one user. Can't hurt. If that doesn't work take it back.
Hmmm...I did take out both batteries, but I probably waited 10 minutes or so. I doubt 30 min. would matter, but I might just try it. What do I have to lose?
Damnnnn, i have been hearing of loads of people with this Error 99 problem! This is a real worry for me as someone considering buying one.
While i don't wish to start panic's, negative rumours etc i am really curious to know how many people are having to send their camera's back? This reminds me of the many 10D users who were getting Error99 problems at first.
I've been following your thread and I thought I was one of the lucky ones that wasn't going to encounter this error. I'll deal with it, though, and send it in for repair (in fact I just got back from FedEx--Irvine should have it Monday morning).
I do wish I would have received the second one I'm on the waiting list for, as now I have to resort back to a 30D until mine is fixed...
I didn't believe it was a major problem either until it ended up being my own Mark III. Now it is major to me. I'm still debating if I should return it and wait for another new one or just send it in to be repaired.
If I am lucky enough to buy another new one, I run the risk of having a problem again. If I send it to be repaired, maybe they will get to the bottom of what caused the error and fix it for good.
It's a tough call. I'm going to think about it over the weekend.
Is there a way of quickly going from One Shot to AI-Servo with one button without taking your eye out of the viewfinder? I know you can use a button on some super telephotos, but I don't believe that's available on the 70-200L 2.8 IS. Am I missing something? Any ideas?

If you hold the AF button in, it will switch from One-shot to Al Servo or from Al Servo to one-shot. Page 168.
I have seen reports of at least 4 already.
Some sent it in for repair, others just sent it back for a new one.
I have sent it back for a new one under the DOA-procedure (you are legally entitled to a new one).
I have talked to somebody who sent it back to repair which just took it apart and then reassembled it without finding anything.
It seems that the problem is getting great proportions,

Mike,
just sent it back for a new one. You are entitled to a new one !
this way the message gets back to Canon.
I had the same problem, and I'm waiting for a new one.

PS - CPS Belgium has lent me a replacement 1DMkII meanwhile

The error 99 was a very common problem with the 20d and Canon very quickly released a firmware upgrade which in a lot of cases solved the problem
if the new mk111 is doing the same for lots of new owners... I would think a new firmware would be imminent
Chris
I don't think this is a firmware issue. There is something mechanically wrong with mine. The mirror is not flipping up. It is not a contact issue either from what I can tell since the problem occurs without a lens attached. (It should still fire and it is not.)
It *could* be a battery issue or a battery contact issue. I know that one time, when I ran down the battery in my 1D-2, I got this error and the same sorta thing happened. Replacing the battery helped.
I'd first make sure the battery is fully charge (probably is, of course). If that's OK, then try a different battery (but you probably don't have one). In that case, I'd try the A/C adapter, just to see if that fixes the issue. If it does, you at least know it's a battery and/or battery-contact issue.
...that is a good idea ! why didn't I try this one !

Probably won't turn out to be that, though....Show more →
