Canon can't say they are leaders in the technology and at the same time scratch their heads when people complain about the lack of new technology.
That 40D better be something special. Rumors have it that Canon might have a FOveon type sensor in the works for the 1DsIII and maybe the 40D.
I've always seen a parallelism between the 1Ds &1D line and the 5D & x0D line (N's and I, II, III aside). The 5D is a baby 1Ds interation, and the 20D is a baby 1D. Maybe they come out with a new sensor technology with the 1DsIII and the 20D which makes its way to the 5D successor later.
If this is the year of great things for the EOS line, it is hard to believe that taking away an "n" and adding an "I" to the 1DIIn is what they are going to do with PMA show.
To beat the 200D, the 40D is going to have to be 14MP with weather sealing, eye control and some e-goodies to make Canon compelling again. The 20D had the D100 faded, that is what I expect from someone that says they are the markets technology leader.
Am I the only one thinking sony's DSLR designers should be tarred and feathered? :worried:
I know, it is a camera - a tool, not a design object but still...
Hm, haven't got used to that sony writing on DSLR bodies yet, it's kind of out of place
However, I'm interested what they will release, since they claim oh so big gains of market share in the future...

Sony is an important player in professional broadcast quality video market, competing directly with Canon. They want to be a player in the photomarket as well and not just a gadget manufacturer. So the Cybershot line had to be extended with some pro and semi products. This is good for the brand imago. You can be sure there was a thought behind the take over of Konica Minolta and licensing of Carl Zeiss brand. We'll definitely see more interesting products from Sony in the future.

I think you're hoping for too much. IMO, the 40D will be a logical extension of the 30D, think XT -> XTi. The camera that will compete feature-wise with the D200, except for price, will be the reputed 3D, a stripped down 5D.
Any update on the US street date? It's hard to believe that the excitment is over already for the MkIII - I can't wait to get mine. The Nikon folks would've been "a little thrilled" to have such a camera announced.

I'll always said that if you were going to dream, dream big, otherwise why bother
I like everything you said. Everything! Your desires for the 40D seem very big and probably won't happen but I like your direction. I'm sure many will say it will all cost too much for the 40D level but I believe Canon needs to make up for the wimpy 20D upgrade, the 30D. While the 30D is by all rights a fine camera, it's not really a 20D upgrade in my opinion. Warmed over 20D I would say. The 20D was revolutionary, no doubt, but they just basically changed the name to 30D and tweaked it here and there.
It is way past time for an upgrade to the 20D. Gosh, it's been 2 1/2 years since it was announced without an upgrade. It's way past time for a real upgrade.
I would imagine the 40D, when it comes, this year or next, will be somewhere between what you said and a warmed over 30D. I would love to see the eye control, foveon sensor, some weather sealing, DigicIII, and at least 12MP to be an upgrade. Anything less will be just another "warmed over" camera. Larger viewfinder, 3" screen and other "goodies" would be really nice.
If the other site is genuine, why are there no links on that site, and why no mention of this lens on the genuine Sigma site
sigma-photo.co.jp is actually more official than sigmaphoto.com. The .co.jp is the official site from Japan. Since Sigma is a Japanese company, all their info and whatever goes to their Japanese site first before it comes to ours.
It appears golf and photography have a lot in common. Golfers are always waiting for the new equipment with the promise of improving their game. Annually, golfers are disappointed when new clubs don't improve their handicaps. Perhaps next year's equipment innovation will do it.
It appears photographers also wait for the next gadget to improve their art. Unfortunately, great glass, proper technique, and creativity are all that is needed. Enjoy the great equipment you already own as it meets or exceeds most of our creative abilities. Technology is a game of leap frog...Canon jumps Nikon and Nikon jumps Canon. If you wait 18 months, the lead will change. Have patience.
Is there anyone else who is surprised, or disappointed at the lack of a 30D successor at PMA
Canon has not really released a "new" APS DSLR in the mid price zone since the D60.
As a result, Nikon has been having a field day with new buyers who might have been Canon customers if there was a newer, and more innovative design in this mid price zone (between entry level, and 5D).
