Canadians - you buying the 1D III from the US to save $$$ ?

US Price: $4499 + $55 Express Shipping * exchange = $4946 CND
CND Price: $5679 CND

With GST you'll save about $740...any reason not too?

It looks like also there is a shop at least in Barcelona (Spain) that is going to receive the 1D3 by this Friday. -->> around 4.000€ --> $5400

The info comes from a Spanish forum, where also some guy affirm that he has received a call from Germany today affirming that the person who was speaking already has the 1D3 in his hands just today (In Germany) !!. So it has been delivered by the dealer.

Nill,

Evidently the system on the 1D3 triggers the shutter 3 times upon start up and another 3 times upon shut down as part of the process. One can, via the CF's, turn it off completely and manually trigger it only when needed or not at all. It sounds like a slightly different system then the 400d. I'm thinking about shutting it off until it's needed but am also wondering if the system will be effctive if not used constantly. This will be one of those things where mass user feedback probably will end up dictating what the best long term

I'll just take 6 fewer shots when I use my 1D3 and I will come out even.

IN my experience - and this has been beaten to death a couple of times - I purchase every Canon item in Canada from Aden camera and I always come out ahead on the price. And - the local service close at hand is difficult to beat.

Great great great! Muchas gracias Juan.

I hope my shop in Germany will get it earlier than expected, but if at least
they don't have it later, I will not complain!

Honestly, I think that if Canon have already delivered some shops in
Germany, there is no reason mine would only get theirs one week later.
To me, if it means a second batch, the delay would be longer than that...

Looks like you could save even more money from Hong Kong... though how you would arrange that...?

Anyway, no, I'm buying locally.

There are a number of factors to consider but here are a couple:

- If you want the camera sooner than later, is it realistic to expect faster delivery from the US considering the much larger demand there from the much larger US photographer pool? Unless you were early onto a wait list, I doubt you'll see a camera any time soon.
Also note, you pay GST on imports and depending on which province you live in, you will also be charged PST.

- If you are a Canadian CPS member, the price is $5000 Cdn plus taxes, effectively eliminating any price difference. (For those who don't know, Canon Canada offers a discounted CPS price on gear - this does not apply to CPS in the US). Additionally, Canadian CPS Mark III orders are being given priority fulfillment, which should keep more pro orders with local dealers.

I have to admit, I feel the Canadian non-CPS price is set $200-300 too high. But I think Canon Canada are looking at it in the short term primarily based on sales to CPS members (since initial shipments will be to CPS members). For those customers, the price is the same as the US. Non CPS member sales are gravy for the next X months. If not a CPS member, it might be worth waiting six months to let the US price settle before deciding. Sure, it will be painful to wait so long, but it's a question of what's more important - having the camera now at a premium or saving some money by waiting? Historically, the price drops faster in the US than in Canada, but even with this camera I doubt the US price will drop substantially within six months. Perhaps by then the supply might catch up with demand... and in that scenario, I'd only buy from the US if my local dealer wasn't willing to be somewhat flexible on the price (while still allowing for him to make a profit). This is an area Canon Canada has taken heat for in the past and finally last year dropped prices on a lot of gear to be more inline with US pricing. Though now that the Canadian dollar is once again gaining ground, it makes it tough for local dealers to compete against imports from the US.

Well Hunt's has maintained to me all along that based on when they were told Canon would ship that they would have them in hand on the 24th so all of the above seems to fit with that given the transit time to the US.

Are you saying Aden Camera will beat B&H or J&R prices today, with the exchange rate at a 30 year record?

Warranty service is the same with US or CND cameras/lenses with Canon. If the price is within a couple hundred dollars, I just pick up locally as well, just because its quicker, but for $740 I don't mind a couple extra days in customs.

I think Canon Canada needs to update its 1D Mark III price based on the current exchange?

Just to make the pain more palpable for us all...

Today in Hong Kong I got to see the 1D MkIII in a shop. New and in box. price, 4100 usd (for the first time ever a camera body in HK cheaper than overseas!).

To make it more painful...it was not even accounted for. As in, I could have bought it having walked into the shop!

Catch is.....I am waiting for the 1Ds MkIII. Other catch, could be a parallel import from Japan with Japan instructions or somesuch. Didn't really get into it as I was looking for a Gitzo monopod anyway.

so far there is still no confirmation of a shop taking delivery of any cameras. so it doesn't look like anything to get excited about. I just can't see Beumont as the first place to get a 1DIII in the USA.

Well if they have been invoiced that means the cameras are on their way. I'd expect a smaller shop to watch the invoicing like a hawk over a large shop, where it would be the accounting staff, not the sales staff, looking at Canon's invoicing online

Local store here still knows nothing... but all the chief muckety-mucks are in meetings this morning, so the sales guys maybe don't have the latest info... No idea where I'm at in line over there (they won't really tell), but...
