I'm not some big shot photographer or make a living at it, but I love photography. That being said, I think Canon should at least be an honest company and let their customers know what is happening with new products like the Mark III. Many of their customers have sold other cameras expecting delivery and pricing as disclosed in the major industry trade show or put off purchasing replacement products based on their mis-information. I say shame om Canon, We are loyal customers and deserve better disclosure. I will still buy the Mark III, but I will not be the same loyal customer as I would have been with simple honest information.

That is being naοve. The publically available prices and dates are just estimates, subject to change. Unless you have a contract with Canon to deliver the product by a certain date or be given a price break or other compensation, expect nothing more.

It is usually not a good idea to sell older gear to buy replacement gear until you have tested the new product to ensure that it will perform to your needs.

Sure, a little more 'upfrontness' would always be appreciated by any company, but it's hard to expect it. Things happen: complications arise, products get delayed, etc. Eh, not much you can do.

Continue taking pictures and enjoy your current equipment. It won't work less well when the 1d3 finally is released.

Remember the EOS 3

When the EOS 3 was first released there were many complaints about incorrect exposure. In fact, Popular Photography held off their review for months in order to allow Canon time to fix the issue (and didn't bother to tell their readers).

I would rather have Canon delay the release than have them put a not-quite-ready-for-prime-time $4500 body on the shelves.

Paolo - What I think is - buyer beware.

If you can purchase it in person, then that might not be a bad thing. If you would be buying from someplace other than BH or Adorama, then me personally, I would pass.

PA,

I think he is right about below...you typically go down a list to get to the next person...Now if you would consider the same offer, I would be most appreciative.

I took the liberty of lifting the following posting from dpr...

"This is copied from the Digital Wedding Forum posted yesterday.

Canon U.S.A. is still on target to begin shipments of the EOS-1D Mark III to its authorized dealers by the end of May. This is the same information we supplied to dealers on April 16th, and there have been no changes in our plans since then. "By the end of May" is as close as I can say for now. Shipments may begin sooner than that (they have not begun yet in the U.S.A.), but they most likely won't begin any later than that. Again, this is U.S.A. information only. Shipment schedules in other markets may differ.

As I am sure you can imagine, demand for this camera is going to exceed available inventories for an unknown period of time. As a result, the camera will initially be "on allocation" to authorized U.S.A. dealers. It's difficult to say when a specific dealer will receive merchandise, or how many cameras will be shipped on a per-dealer basis. The basic idea is to spread the distribution as fairly as possible according to the orders we've received. We expect to receive shipments from the factory in Japan regularly, and shipments to dealers will be scheduled accordingly.

Please understand that as a member of our Marketing team, I have no way of checking the allocations or shipping schedules for individual dealers. That's a Sales issue, so my best suggestion is to keep checking with your dealer for updated information.

Shall I start a rumor about how BAD they'll be, so the rest will cancel, too?

Yes, I was #8 on the 1D-III list (for two of them), and #5 of the 580EX-II list.

I cancelled because I was also on another list. I am #5 at this other place for the 1D-III, and their price is a bit better. Also, they had the 580-EX-II in stock today, so I ordered it there.

Well, I consider it "below" me, because if you look at the list, your name would appear below mine.

In terms of numbers, though, you had a higher number . . so in that sense, you were "above" me, I guess.

jhom, thanks for posting that.

DavidP - I hope there are more of you out there. I canceled at one place to go from #16 to #6. Only one hour farther away. Or next day delivery by ground.

I still can't believe the rumors that the first batch released is still going to have AF issues, since production was delayed by AF issues. And they have an old firmware. blah blah blah

They're out in the wild, no 'real' complaints yet.

Hi, Peter:

Neither I nor anyone else I know at Canon has any complaints about Rob Galbraith's comments on the EOS-1D Mark III, nor did we attempt to influence his report in any way, shape or form.

I can't comment on the specific AF issues affecting pre-production 1D Mark III cameras, but I can confirm that none of the pre-production cameras were completely functional in terms of AF performance. In other words, there was nothing unique about the particular camera that Rob used.

In the meantime, the initial firmware for mass production samples of the 1D Mark III (i.e., cameras intended for sale to the public) has been approved. Therefore, it stands to reason that any known AF issues that may have affected the preproduction cameras have since been resolved to Canon's satisfaction. In any case, the proof will be in the pudding as "they" say. We are content to let our customers tell us what they think after they perform their own tests.

Ah Shucks!!! I was hoping the cat would not be let out of the bag until after shipment of the 1D3. Now, I have little chance of pre order list members ahead of me on the list cancelling their order like DavidP.

Perhaps, another set of rumors needs to be started to rattle prospective buyers (at least preorder buyers ahead of me on the list that I am on). How about this...a little birdie I know who is well connected in the pecking order of things said that the 1D3 is a hazard to users' health. It causes premature hearing loss because of the rapid fire 10fps shutter speed. Also, it causes macular degeneration because of the 3" LCD screen everyone will be using in Liveview and all the pixel peeping at high ISO trying to find the nonexistent noise that is supposed to be there....
