Have a look to this E-Mail received by one colleague from Japan, sent to him about his order:

The shop says the Canon distributor notified yesterday to say the "defect item was found with the first medium production manufacturing stock." and then "Both the manufacturer and the distributor deeply apologize that the first payment date (delivery date) is now COMPLETELY undecided."

It has been edited :

"EDIT - Move along, nothing to read here. My MARK III delivery is delayed for a bit, but there is no known defect problem with manufacturing."

Played with the 1D3 last friday, nice! CF door was jammed with Gaffa, they did not want
me to use my own card. This was a pre-production cam, had to be reset with battery removal at least once during my 10 minutes play time.
Canon Sweden said delivery in May and price to be MSRP 43000 SKr...
400 bodies pre-ordered at Canon Sweden so far.... guess those non-early birds will have
to wait a while.

How long does it "usually" take 3rd party companies like Sterling Tek to stock a new battery for something like this?

It took about six years for the 1-series. ;-)

Not until there's a market for them. Meaning enough to make development and manufacturing profitable. Also remember that a number of people won't buy anything less that "Canon", strictly OEM. That's why it took so long for the 1D and it was a power hog.

What do you mean?

Aftermarket batteries have been available for several years for the 1D series, so what are you referring to?

I see the smiley face, but I don't get it...

That sounds about right. I'll buy the OEM as opposed to not having batteries. My Sterling Tek last far longer than mu 30D's Canon OEM. Too bad.

He means the after market arrived summer 2005 but the 1D battery style was around for half decade or so before that and your choice was to pay Canon or carry a long extention cord around.

Could you tell me how much you will pay for it? I am being told that the price in Canada is still TBA.

Battery is good for 2200 shots, and unless they cost $300, can't imagine why you wouldn't just buy a second Canon battery and leave it at that.

The general consensus seems to be that the batteries will be somewhere in the $140 range +/- 10%. That would seem to fit given the old packs pricing, but who knows with Canon being so stingy with actual price commitments.

My local dealer quoted $125 for the new battery when I placed my pre-order, and they seemed to have a Canon related price to base it on. So between a more reasonable price and a desire for the best possible water resistant seal, I will likely stay with real Canon. If you read the details in the White paper, you will note quite a bit of "smarts" built in to the new battery in terms of electronics, so it may end up difficult for a third party to reverse engineer the battery properly anyway.

Canon rep today said it would ship by the end of the month. I think there could be some price flexibility soon as well, but it will be up to the dealers

Anyway, I shot some ISO 6400 jpgs today on the 1D3 here in Boston today. I reviewed them in LR just now (haven't posted them, but perhaps later) and there's no doubt the noise game is over for Nikon et. al. unless they do something. The shots do have noise, but considering they were taken at ISO 6400 I'm pretty impressed. They are 2 to 3 stops faster than what Nikon gives you.

I've been somewhat cool to the 1D3 (waiting for a 1Ds3) but the camera is extremely impressive in other ways too. In case anyone has any doubts, it is NOT an upgraded 1D2n. That will become obvious when it starts shipping but the value of 1D2(n)s is going to fall fast IMO. For those of you that haven't seen it yet, you'll be impressed with many features, but the live view, the wireless connectivity, the performance (for those that need it) and the LCD screen will make a big difference in all situations.
