Buy one now. Prints are absolutely breathtaking. I shot this at 87 degrees in full sun. Operated the camera under those conditions for 5 hours and it didn't falter once. Due to the size restrictions here it doesn't do it justice. Also, see this gallery: http://www.defordphoto.com/MKIII/AISERVO/

the first thing i noticed was the image difference in the 1D3. little sharpening needed out of the box vs the post needed to satisfy on the 1D2. after a little time much more comfortable to operate too.

And don't forget iso 6400...pretty handy when needed.

Also forgot, the files when actually printed as opposed to little web jpegs, are beautiful, better than and MkIIN, which is pretty amazing itself.

I certainly would not buy a used one right now; with the AF problem I would want my name on the original sales receipt for any future warranty repair/replacement work. Just not worth the risk at this point until the bugs are worked out.

I noticed a new MK3 on B&S a few days ago with a price tag of $5500 which was outrageous (I don't think this is price policing since I'm not posting to that particular thread) I think that FS ad just dropped off the map. There was another at $4800....same story.

This is what the op was referring to. His take was deliberately misleading.

Westfall could provide a response in August, though, in a monthly column he writes for a photojournalism publication, The Digital Journalist.

"I'll have more on EOS-1D Mark III autofocusing in the next edition of Tech Tips," Westfall said in the July issue. [Quote]

I wouldn't hesitate to buy one now if I knew the warranty would stand up, if there is any question then no, I wouldn't buy one regardless of the price.

BTW... I love mine and am not having any RG type problems.

John,

Huge difference between 20D images and 1DMkIII images for what that is worth. Much smoother looking and they require much less PP. Also, the handling of the camera puts previous Series 1s to shame.

While I appreciate the accolades, the problem with comments like this to wit: "puts previous Series 1s to shame." is that they imply that the previous models were dogs despite the rave reviews and glowing praises they received when released...and despite all the fantastic samples we have seen posted in these very forums from these "inferior" machines.

The 1D-3 certaintly doesn't "put previous 1-series to shame", IMO.

However, it does do a LOT of things that make shooting much easier and/or enjoyable.

And it gives, IMO, about 1 stop of more useable high ISO.

It is unlikely that Canon/Westfall would schedule for a month in advance an official Canon media release admitting a fault with 1D-3, and/or, prescribing the means to correct it.

Why would Canon unecessarily give appearances of withholding a fix from it's pro customers by scheduling such a release a full month in advance?

IMO, Canon/Wesfall will announce such a fix immediately, as soon as a fix can be implemented, with all the Service Centers ramped up to handle the intake if necessary. I doubt the implementation of a fix is keyed upon the publishing schedule of Wesfall's articles in DJ.

yea I would agree that the MK3 does not shame the previous 1 series bodies. I have been using the DS series for the last 4 years & have been extremely happy. The MK3 is definitely a quantum leap though & it will most likely replace my 1DSMK2 as the main camera.

I was browsing on amazon.com last night, and they had it (in stock at amazon.com, NOT one of the other sellers). I placed the order last night and it shipped this morning--I should have it tomorrow.

I promptly canceled my order with Adorama this morning, and they said I just made about 150 people in line behind me happy.

This will be my second body, the first I got in Adorama's first shipment.

They seem to be shipping in the UK, although slowly. I was #49 on Warehouse Express's list, and they said they were getting 5-10 per week. Fortunately, while idly polling sites for search of stock last week, I noticed that Jessop's had one available for collection. It's mine now It had come in just before they shut, and I got it just after they opened the next day...

I cancelled my order at Tallyn's as I already have mine from Durys and it seems to be working great. Tallyn's orders seems to have halted.

do you mean they have stopped taking orders or deliveries have stopped .... really kind of weird that this camera is SOOO hard to get a hold of ........ Im really pretty unhappy about canon's LACK of disatribution ... Loved my 1D MK2 ..... but I really hate to think I NEED to re buy a 1Dmk2 just because I cant GET a MK3 just to REsell it AGAIN in a couple months and then the PROSPECT of trying to BUY a 1Ds MK3 to compliment the 1D MK3 ... (share the accessories and Human Interface ......... how long for THAT ... next summer ?? good thing this is NOT my PRIMARY way to make a living !!! ......

anyone with any news as to WHEN some REAL distribution will happen ..... its not a mater of affording ONE ... its how to get my hands one one without being GOUGED 1500.00 for it .......

canon PLEASE open the GATES !!
