As we ponder things like pixel pitch and the sensor size of the new cameras that Canon might annnounce, and dream of clean ISO 3200 or 6400...
Here's a link to a facinating two part article that looks at the real world relationship between sensor size, photon counts and signal to noise ratios including a range of Cameras such as the Canon 1D Mark II... http://www.clarkvision.com/imagedetail/does.pixel.size.matter/index.html#Counting_Photons
It's a longish two part article with some excellent images and graphs to show just why those P&S struggle against our DSLRs....
At first this worried me, since it showed that the signal to noise ratio in sensor in the Canon 1D Mark II was aligned to the theoretical best possible limits.... But on deeper reading this seems to be linked to a set photon well count to fully trigger the sensor (presumably related to the sensor design).. However what is in turn clear(ish!) from this is to maintain or improve on ISO sensitivities while increasing resolution in a FF or APS-C design will require a "next generatation" improvement in CMOS sensors so that fewer photons are required for the same "full well" effect...

I need to get serious help. Am i the only one who's spent many thousands of dollars hoping canon doesnt do anything? (which we all know wont happen!) haha!
Damn, gotta find self control!
I estimate new 1 series , 5D upgrade, 40D . Makes sense, all of canon's bodies are now quite old. But 22mp, man i feel sorry for someones hard drives!
I'm hoping for an upgraded 1D MK2 N. Maybe ~12 MP, still with the 1.3 crop, and still at 8.5 fps. If they could just make a resolution increase and some minor tweaking, and keep it around $4,000 that would be superb.

Billions of dollars have been spent in R&D to break out of the constraints he describes. If Canon truly did need to come up with new lenses for some new sensor, they've come up with a substantially new CMOS device. That is for me by far the most interesting aspect of what Canon may announce.
I hope so. i've looked a MF backs twice. If I liked Hasselblad I think I would have switched already. I'm uncomfortable with the Phase backs not working on current production cameras.

A light (no grip) 22MP 1Ds is a dream camera for me.
Great resolution, but still small and light enough for travel or hike.
And I'm sure it will work just fine with my 35 f1.4L or 135 f2L...
If this is true, I'm very happy

Could anyone shed light on this question for me? If(big if) Canon were to release a new product, say an upgrade to the 1D MKII N, how long in the past has it taken before the release date? Just curious because I'm in the market for 2 new pro bodies, but If there were to be a new camera, and it was going to be released this November or December, thats quite a wait, so i need to decide if i should pick up a 1D MKII N now, and a new model later if they do announce it....Show more →

Usually, around a month to six weeks between announcement and availability.
Regards,
Heck, you can usually get one on eBay within minutes of the actual product being announced.

"The Erwin"? have people lost their bloody minds? To attribute a rumored camera a name based on a person who publishes a rumor that has no more validity than any other rumor on a website that is quirky and among the most technically unsophisticated around and who can't even manage to not use 1D and D1 interchanageably is lunacy! If Ken Rockwell had published the same rumor would people be referring to it as the "Ken" or the "Rockwell" or don't we like Kenny enough around here to give him credit? Maybe it has nothing to do with thinking Ken is a nutcase most of the time and a degree of respect is bestowed on Erwin because he writes about Leica and since Leicas are better than Canons it is obvious that he knows more than everyone else. ...Show more →
Well, I see how you could look at it that way... but "The Kenny" ? That sounds like someone with their baseball cap on backwards. Now "The Erwin" sounds much more intellectual, conjures up image of some one with a pocket protector and wearing glasses.
