It may be buried in here somewhere, but when do they release the annoucements...on the day of the show or in advance of the show? Never really paid attention before but curious this time...thanks.

There is aposting burried way back in this thread showing that Canon has generally announced DLSRs / Lenses from 2 weeks to 3 or 4 days before the major shows... Last years 400D was a little early as stocks of the 350D ran out in some places (like Australia)...
For what it is worth several countries seem to be planning internal Canon staff briefings and announcments arround 23 February so the info can't stay secret for very long after that...

That s@cks! It's been more than two years already without touching it,
how long can they afford to keep it like this? They should know everybody knows
the upgrade is coming so probably nobody is buying 1Ds MkII right now...
Man, that would really s@ck... I'd love to have it by May, July at the latest...
Lordcarl I believe you... (Even though I see you have just edited your words re just seeing your mentors unit etc out of the post!)
The pre-production unit I had described to me also had the 3 inch screen and was a similar size to the 1Ds but it wasn't clear to me if the grip was built in or removable (scond hand info unfortunately and the person didn't ask at the time)
Did you see the 1Ds II replacement or the 1D IIN replacement?
Any mention of the dynamic cropping (the older unit my contact saw (claimed to anyway) supposedly had this)?
Oh, and the report I got was that the photographer absolutley loved the quality of the images from the camera... He would have used it for production work except the RAW format was only supported by a special beta verison of DPP which came with the camera and he used some other RAW processor as his main standard.... How about your mentor - what does he think of the images?

Once again, don't mix up wishful thinking with fact. You want to get a Mk III. But the fact is that there is no competition to the current 1Ds Mk II. There is no other dSLR that offers the pixelcount and high-ISO noise performance. On this one, Canon could afford the wait. I don't expect that they will, but they do have the luxury of doing so.

I seconded that. For the moment. My pro-Nikon friends based in Malaysia emailed me that the local Nikon has advertised in most of that country's major newspapers since last Monday on a series of teasers and which will continue until middle of next week - there must be something big coming from Nikon too. They even get invitations from the local Nikon to attend the launch to be held sometime in mid-March (no big deal basically as we will know all about the new Nikon prior to PMA 2007).
According the rumors of the article in the spanish magazine DSRL, Nikon is going to introduce a new model in between D40 & D80 that is already prepared (possible D60 ?); and for the middle end part of the year the rumors point out at a "big announcement" (probably in the high end, may be a FF body)
Well folks, I saw earlier that there was a posting about a student doing research about this rumor forum, and I have tried not to read this list as I considered it a waste of time, but like candy... Anyway, as it turned out, there actually is some good speculations here, and references. So, I got some inspiration for the seminar I just had this morgning, "The future of imaging in science". So, thanks folks! (The consensus was that while nice, digitally corrections of in-chip-specified lens abberations will not justify the cost, at least not at this time point, and not for most scientific needs. Expensive and energy consuming sensor cooling will probably be outcompeted by larger pixels, and we do not need more than 12 MP sensors - we can still crop and get publishing quality, and its good for that extra DOF). However, when it comes to private needs - I really would like to see a sub $2000 EOS 3D release from canon, I want those extra focusing points in a FF body, they are great for TS-E lenses etc

I believe the D50 is between the D40 and D80.:b
Thom Hogan a semi Nikon insider, has said the upcoming pro Nikon camera will remain APS-C. And he's been whining about that for the past 1 week.

That will be the D50 replacement IMO, nothing earth shattering, but still added pressure on Canon. D40, D60, D80, D200.
The big announcement maybe a FF or a D3H which I think would stay APS-C.

1DsII sales have likely slowed dramatically. There's enough sophistication in that end of the market for a high percentage of photogs understanding that a replacement is near. But there is also a possibility that this is a new high-end for canon, but it does not replace the 1DsII. That may be the surprise. If Canon is putting a lens line above L, they are likely putting a camera above the current structure.
When the original 1Ds came out, the disappoint was its price. It just seemed very expensive in a market where DSLR prices were dropping "like a stone". It was really a great bargain, but it took awhile for many to appreciate its value.
The difficulty reconciling rumours may be due to putting those rumors in the historical framework of Canon DSLR. "$20K camera body" - your an idiot. "New lens line?" - don't be stupid, most better lenses are not a problem.
But we all know a 35mm sensor can't compete with MF digital, right?

If that happens, it woud be a stupid decision. 1Ds mkII is 30 month old, besides that it's a flagship camera, that should be announced for Canon's double anniversary. The most logical announcements would be, 1Ds mkIII, 40D and 5D mkII or insted of its announcement a signifficant price drop. And at the end of the year 1D mkIII and 5D mkII, if they won't announce it on PMA.

Yeah, I've been waiting too. But it may just be a couple of months behind.

New wides, new mount, designed for digital correction soon from Canon is my prediction. Perhaps a sensor design relying less on microlenses and needing high-angle light. My main source is the president of Hasselblad publicly defending their new wide liked to H3 digital correction. He essentially said that MF had lost enough ground to Canon and Nikon and this linkage between camera and lens was necessary.
12mp? - adequate publishing quality and competition among commercial photographers are not the same need. Can quality 12mp make a very nice double truck image. Sure. But "very nice image" is largely a relative evaluation based upon current expectations of quality.
