What the pro marketing term for having the option of making a smaller raw file?

Which is different than cropping in PS how? If you want a crop mode, buy an extra grid screen and score a frame on it yourself, bingo, "crop mode." Either way (cropping in camera or cropping in PS, it is all still just cropping) the periphery is still there in the VF, and the focusing points are still in the exact same place, and the exact same size.

I don't think you are right about this...

If you have an in body crop the camera could then use only AF points within the smaller frame and more importantly ccould meter only for the cropped area. If you crop in PS the metering can be off as the photo initially included a lot more information. I think that in in body crop is, and if it isn't is should be, a whole lot more than the simple crop anyone can do in PS.

Make a great body with an EF mount so that people don't lose their investment in glass... 1/2

No one has mentioned it, but I think a combination of in-body and in-lens IS wouldn't be a bad thing. The in-body IS is there to help with shorter focal lengths (like 17-40 or 17-70 on a crop body) and the longer teles still have dedicated in-lens IS to do it right.

After 214 pages, do we yet have any real rumours or is it all still speculation and wish-lists? I did read about the first 100 pages over a period of time, but there was nothing in those.

One would assume Canon would meter from the cropped area, ala the D2Xs, although the D2X metered from the entire VF. Regardless, center weighted and spot metering are available for a reason. But I digress, you are missing the point.

First two lines of Canon's current 1D series marketing, taken from
HERE.

  1. World's fastest digital SLR*: 8.5 fps for up to 48 full-resolution JPEGs in a burst.
  2. 8.2 Megapixel CMOS Sensor with a convenient 1.3x lens conversion factor, combined with DIGIC II Image Processor for outstanding image quality.

Crippling the sensor to accomplish the high speed wouldn't seem to fit the 1D series. I could see that being offered in the 1DsII, but I'll say it again, the 1D series has always been first and foremost about speed. For those of us that buy the 1 series cameras for just that purpose, retarding the sensor for the primary use doesn't make sense. I want to use all the pixels at hi-speed, not do what I could do in PS in camera. If you want FF, buy one of the other(plural) models Canon offers, but for high speed, I'd prefer the resolution not be a compromise (regardless of FF or APS_H.)

It appears that Erwin simply took this speculation and reported it as fact.

Oh now that would be hilarious if my speculative post was off the mark but Erwin took it for the real thing. Seriously, I am still pretty confident about the general specs and details of the post I made on Jan 31.

That said, I have no secret sources, and it was simply all made on a determination of what progressive incremental improvements were likely at this juncture.

"first reported here"??

EOS -1Ds III 20MP with a 12MP 8fps high speed crop (merger of 1D and 1Ds lines - the 1Dv or 1Vd)

That from January................of 2006 (Japanese web site)
Notice the "v" designation.
So, Erwin and everyone are recirculating rumors, or.........

Note how the 1.3 crop has confused people. It's taken to mean a 1.3 crop camera.
Note the 1VD name possibility. Clearly not from an english speaker . "yeah, I just got VD......

What was the humorous phrase again?

"I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it!" ?

This is just innocent bickering, a harmless waste of intellectual energy on educated guesswork, parotting, spewing wish-lists, dreaming, cross-forum posting, some spamming, and general good-natured talk. So we're largely chasing ghosts, untill Canon spills the beans. So what?

1Dvs - Big Erwin - several months later

Both the 1D and 1Ds bodies have exactly the same size metering segments and AF points, as the 1D is cropped, both the metering and AF fills more of the frame. In neither camera does the metering stretch to the edges though, it does in the 5D/30D but not in the 1 series for some reason. That said the 1 series is far more accurate in evaluative mode. The concentration of AF points in the 1Ds and 5D for that matter, is embarressing, you are forced to focus recompose most of the time (at least for portrait/people work) to focus on the eye but get a decent composition which is just silly, 45 AF points and you still have to recompose. The D2X has 12 but they are much more spread out near to the edges and the cross sensors are more sensible as well.

thanks EOSfun... there has been this f6 module rumour for a long time... maybe less integrated design is what all high end DSLRs end up with... now we have partially modulized 1D already (body + optional wifi grip (maybe also GPS grip? MP3 player grip?)

You may as well tell us what your predictions are for the 40D, it will eliminate the middle man (erwin) and save us all a lot of time.

There's little question of what the 40D will be, it's a question of when. There also a question of a lowest price camera, a xxxxD. But no one is trading down, so there's not much interest.
Lens have been quiet, with a sports photographer saying there will be a new 200 and an additional tele. But the 200 will be predicted continuously until it returns.
If we can get Erwin to predict the 40D, it can be Pee Wee Erwin.
