Oh yeah, we did that as a joke in the photo lab with the disposable flash cameras

And to keep on topic, I would like to start a rumor for my dream lens, the EF 17-70 f/4L IS
With just a little luck, an interference/ intervention from alien technology this will replace the 17-40 at PMA.

On the other hand there are these persistent positions such as yours (or that of NikT) which make it seem that Canon is "dancing to another tune" as far as DSLRs... In the last couple of rumour rounds they seemed to hit a critical point a few weeks before the show and lock into something very close to reality. Not yet this time it would seem….

I do hope my source is right though

As you say - not long to go now... Imagine the “screams” in this thread if (say) yours was right “Canon has lost its way” etc…
...Show more
Canon, Nikon and Olympus have just posted record profits for 2006. Both Canon and Nikon attributed the rise in performances to increase sales of both consumer digicams and DLSRs while Olympus' is from increased sales of its microscopic and medical equipment plus a small percentage came from its consumer digicams and 4/3 DSLRs.

Canon's profits for 2006 is larger than both Nikon and Olympus combined - I don't think its managers and executives globally will be losing sleep over so-called bashings in forums everywhere that the company has lost its way where new models of DSLRs are concerned!

40D is not a leak from a genuine Canon site. It was a 3rd-party site created by an EOS user to look like a genuine Canon HK site. I guess that move was an orchestrated "leak" probably sanctioned by staff inside Canon HK to throw most forummers off the trail of the actual new EOS body and it works - we have more people confident of seeing the EOS 40D being announced on Feb 20 or PMA 2007 than a new 1-series version!

As of today, one of my peers from HK, who specialises in motorsports and shoots with multiple EOS-1Ds MK II (previously with two 1D MK II), told me the same thing as what my pro dealer had told me recently, his regular dealer told him to put off buying the 1D II N at this moment of time, which the shop still has in stock. If a regular dealer could afford not to sell an existing stock to one of his best customers - there has to be something newer on the way!

I am sure HK pro dealers already know something most of us don't; they may not be willing to reveal what model designation the new EOS is but they do know what it is and what it has ...

10 more days to go till Feb 20, 2007.

It definitely was on the genuine Canon Hong Kong site when I visited it shortly after the link was first posted here. Unless, of course, our enterprising EOS user had the ability to give his 3rd party site a root URL of www.canon.com.hk, because that was the first thing I checked.

It mimics the real site. The links in it led to either non-Canon HK sections or sites that did not exist. That's why it looks real to fool most people.

Previous EOS DSLR leaks were genuine - that's why many of us are getting excited over that "40D leak". As long as people keep on discussing about the 40D, Canon Inc should be happy that so far no one knows (specs that are close to the actual unit) are being debated anywhere with 10 more days to go!

The only thing most of us are correct so far is the new EOS DSLR is another 10MP camera, that's all. But this does not necessary mean it is a replacement for the EOS 30D. Far from it.

I don't mind a full-frame 1-series with 10.2MP (well, my original prediction was a 12.8MP full-frame ), which is 2MP more than my own 1D II N, as long as it still has the 8.5 fps or more feature intact. As well as a 3-inch OLED screen and continues to use the Ni-MH NP-E3 - I have too many NP-E3s and it would be a hassle for me if the new EOS-1 uses a new, smaller-size lithium-ion type.

What happened to "The Legend". Wasn't that on the Canon Israeli website for ten minutes last fall? That would be more in line with lordcarl's teasing. A new line.

I'd like to know as well.
I talked to the site creator and all I could get is "Canon decided to put it on and decided to take it off".

I think there will be a 40D coming soon for one simple reason.
The 30D is not sellling well.
Canon need something competitive in this part of the market.

Canon is clearly capable of refreshing any of its cameras at PMA. What it does with existing lines this year is a tactic. If they bring out new technology in a new line that is strategic. To insist that a particular camera must be refreshed at PMA without knowing Canon's strategy doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Tatics support the overall strategy. Resources may be great, but are always in competition.
Canon released the HV10 HD camcorder in October. Last week they announced its replacement, the HV20. The well regarded HV10 was on the market a little under four months.
The D200 is certainly is a smart move by Nikon, and an issue for Canon. One way to convince "middle segment" buyer to shoot Canon is directly compete with the D200 with a 40D. But there are other ways to achieve the same objective.

Whatever Canon introduces at PMA this year (if anything) had been in the design pipeline for porbalby at least a year and whatever they have as a "master plan" for even longer. It's highly unlikely they'll be introducing something specifically in response to anything but theyir own plan.

They may skew the marketing of an item to "compete" but that's a different set of strategies and tactics.

I don't think that Canon will be altering anything - but I do think that they will have predicted that the 30D was going to struggle - everyone talks about the D200, but in my view the D80 has taken a lot of Canon sales.
It seems to me likely that Canon were ready for this, and have planned future products to suit.

My guess is image quality won't really be any better than now no matter what comes out. Canon is just finding new bells and whistles to keep gear-o-holics spending.

I firmly believe at this point in the game its the processing stage that makes ALL the difference in photography.

I still like to think it's the guy holding the camera But Canon will probably replace us too.

If lordcarl is right about a 10mp new mount, the image quality will be stunning. It won't be a bayer sensor.
I'm not sure it's correct to say the alternative is a Foveon variant either. Two basic issue with a bayer senor. Fill factor: how much of the surface is light sensitive? spectrum sensitivity: how much of the visible spectrum does each light sensor measure?
If Canon has come up with a new way to measure the full visible spectrum at each sensor, well...... I wouldn't want to be in the photo industry and not work for Canon.

At some point this will happen, and it will come out of basic science.

I hope the Irish do mass transit better than the Americans or we are going to have a camera that is always late, usually broken and pretty much a pain in the ass to use.

No matter what Canon (collectively) thinks, it will lose many sells in $1000-$1500 camera market if they do not come up with a good (!) replacement for 30D. Many have already sold their 30D cameras and are not going to buy them back. I cannot see any new DSLR buyer get a new 30D. Unless Canon management wants to force some people to buy 5D (many prefer crop cameras though) they have to come up with a "40D".

I can believe that if Canon is going into the MF arena. Then it has sense.
