Canon's camera naming system is brain damaged. If it keeps up, then before long we will see the 1DsII3b8%y#.

Hmmm...maybe they're the same. Rumors seem like they are based on maybe a figment of fact, more so than rampant speculation. Regardless of the difference (if any) I am enjoying the banter.

1976: Canon F1...their first "pro" body
1989: Canon EOS-1
1994: Canon EOS-1n
1995: Canon EOS-1n RS
2000: Canon EOS-1v
2001: Canon EOS 1d/1ds
2005: Canon EOS 1d/1ds MKII
2006: Canon EOS 1d/1ds MKIIn their most recent pro body

30 years of their top of the line camera having the "1" badge...i don't see it changing anytime soon.

I think, generally speaking, when you trace a rumor back far enough you learn that it is indeed usually based on speculation.

Almost 200,000 reads. If the bell curve of interest is now in it's infancy, when the show gets closer, and Canon makes or leaks some info after the February 19th rebate cutoff, sometime around the reported Feburary 23rd dealer meeting, the bell curve is sure to increase exponentially. Who is ready to predict 1 million reads over the next 30 days?

I'll bet that many of these reads are searching for some summary of what is thought to be going on, and are unwilling to wade through literally hundreds of pages of conversation and argumment.

Can there be an ongoing master list that catalogs only the equipment rumours, that bypasses the aruguments and debates over semantics that clutter this thread along the way?

For example, posts like mine here and now add absolutely nothing to the rumor mill that the 200,000 reads are likely searching for.

The 1-series has always been Canon's style of naming its cameras. This goes back to the F-1 and A-series of 35mm SLR cameras of the 70s and 80s. All the A-series cameras had the numeric of 1 in their designations: AE-1, A-1, AT-1, AE-1 Program, AV-1 and AL-1. The pro series was designated as F-1, F-1n and New F-1.

While the first EOS camera was the 650, the first pro version was named as the EOS-1. And a lot believe that Canon would called its successor as the EOS-2 then but instead, the company chose to stay with "1" and designated the successor as the EOS-1N. Next came the EOS-1v.

It was natural to name the first pro digital body as the EOS-1D. Well, the Mark II could always be designated as EOS-1D N but I think Canon is reserving this designation for future use.

Other possibilities for new 1-series designations can be one of these:

1) EOS-1D U(ltimate) - when the D and Ds merge
2) EOS-1D N
3) EOS-1D P(rofessional)
4) EOS-1P(erfectionist)
5) EOS-1A(dvanced)
6) EOS-1C(reative)

Bear in mind, the above are just my ramblings and in no way they represent the actual model names Canon may already had in mind for the next 1-series. So spare me the hassle and panic situations (to any Canon rep reading this) as I have no idea what the new EOS DSLR is called so far ...

I donīt know if it was already mentioned, but there are rumors or even a fact that Canon USA rep. /or Regional Sales are called on next mon/tue .... This is just going before UK ones (23-24)

This is starting to look like a possible presentation of new models and news to representatives. Time rumor schedule start to be coherent.

Can anybody from that side of the ocean confirm it?

Jeffs first post:

Hey folks, as the rumor chatter is on the increase, we're making another Command Decision, and bringing back the wildly popular 'Un-Official' Rumor Thread! From now until eternity (approximately the date of PMA or not-so-shortly thereafter ), all rumor-related (and 'want', 'need', 'request', 'price speculation', etc.) posts shall be posted here, in this thread, not in their own, often redundant thread.

Well said...

Also the reality is with the few real rumour posts that there are, people will inevitably grab on to these and start speculating, discussing, debating etc the meaning of some minor comment (e.g the several pages just prior re the Fullcolor sensor)... We get the "yes it's true at last" and "It can't possibly be right..." and "Why would I wasnt that..." etc responses. It's the nature of rumors to create this kind of debate...

All part of the fun and IMO much better than the mess at times like these in (say) DPReview where sometimes every 10th post is a "is there a 40D" or should I wait for a new 1 series"... There you need to search way too many threads to find any snippet of information... And in reality anything good generally either comes from here or is repeated here winithin minutes or hours

I like having it all together in one thread... To those who post saying "I hate these rumour threads" or "We should all stop speculating" - I say don't read the thread - wait until PMA and get the facts... Very little of this thread is about facts (some would say none!) It's all about "I've heard from.." or II wish for.." etc.

I haven't dug down into the mysteries of 3CCD gadgets, but why do you say Olympus? Because they use a smaller sensor?

Yes, in a "reasonable" small video camera you can have 3 x 1/3 inch CCD's. I have a Panasonic GS-400 video camera. Best peice of equipment (and price/value) I have every used. What ever the method , 3CCD, Fovean, truecolor, there's a lot to be said for that type of technology.

Anyway, it was just a summation of who would be the only company that I could see that could go that route.

Nah! All of them are requested to attend the meeting for either a pat on the back or a proper grilling from the top management.

A pat on the back for a job well done for keeping the new DSLR a secret from everyone and the Internet with only 21 days (3 weeks) till official announcement!

A proper grilling with a threat of dismissal should any of them were found to be leaking any specs/features of the new EOS DSLR to outsiders before the announcement date!

I expect a substantial web site from canon explaining the new system. In my time using canon (D60) I've seen excellent core engineering, but nothing creative at all in the physical and software UI. In fact, their early raw conversion/file management programs were terrible. To me it showed a lack of talent, even in fairly easy application programming.

Thanks for your info - do you mind giving a bit of a clue of how you came across it? I appreciate you have to be careful of your sources, but obviously it has a lot more weight if it is from your own personal experience rather than a something you have heard from somewhere.
Any further light you can throw on things would be appreciated.

Hear hear!

DPP is still a joke when it comes to the user-friendliness of the interface...

Couldn't agree more. As a computer engineer, I think it's terrible. But then again, it is written in Japan. There's very little focus on UI standards or usability in the software world here.

I'm trying to figure out the best time for a 5D purchase. Obviously "before the 19th" is important, but B&H has a 14-day return policy from the date of delivery. Perhaps I should order at the end of this week (say, mid-day Friday) and then my items would ship Saturday or Monday, with arrival around the 14th, giving me until the 28th to see if I want to return the 5D to buy a possible replacement. The news will surely have leaked by then, right?

Here are what I would call the "odds" of a replacement, based on what I've read here and elsewhere:

New Low-End (~$450): 25%
400D: 1% (never say never!)
30D: 85%
5D: 40%
1D/1Ds: 90%

Based on your educated guesses, where would you put the odds for each of Canon's current cameras?

Leaks so far? Just about nada! I don't see any change in that, to be honest.

So, it looks like we'll have to wait for the official pre-PMA announcements.

Doug Pardee did some digging, so here's when to expect announcements:

2006: All announcements (including 30D) on Feb 21; show started Feb 26
2005: Most announcements (including 350D) on Feb 17; show started Feb 20
2004: Most announcements on Feb 9 (1DmkII on Jan 29); show started Feb 12
2003: All announcements (including 10D) on Feb 27; show started Mar 2
2002: All announcements (including D60) on Feb 22; show started Feb 24

So generally, 3 to 5 days in advance.

PMA this year starts March 8, that's on a thursday. Minus 3 would mean monday the 5th of March for the announcements.

From photography-on-the.net/forum/:

"I'm told that David Leung (one of the UK's top 3 or 4 Canon dealers) advert in this week's AP (UK) ('Amateur Photographer' magazine) & confirms that Canon are announcing new products at a dealer launch on 23 February, and suggests that Focus will see full details made public."

Also Singapore rep. are called on 23th.

ADDENDUM: I have checked Focus on Imaging 2007, at Birmingham (25-28 Feb);
and surprisingly Canon is the big absent for the moment at the exhibition (not related), all other big ones and dealers from different countries are present.

Now there is a solid rumor... That is... someone actually claiming to know fact...

Much nicer then some one calculating the size of a theorectical pixel and/or reverse engineering from theory what the maximum possible MP count could be on a theroretical new camera...

Man... I wish I could just speed up time and know what's in store...

Hey... I heard of a guy in Hell Michigan who has a time machine... I'm also within 10 miles of PMA home offices... If I could just go to Hell, steal the time machine and then find some Canon rep who's been over at PMA's offices... (I'll get back with you on this).

I feel like a little kid right before Christmass. I am finally selling the last of my Nikon equipment (changed over this summer) so I will have money in hand for a new body. I have the 1DM2 and don't plan on replacing it for some time as it is perfect for what I shoot. I may sell my 30D and upgrade to rumored 40D and then spring for a 5D sometime this spring, or maybe even the 5D upgrade if that will be available this spring. It keeps getting closer and closer to the time we will actually know for sure what Canon has up their sleeve. I could even consider the 1Ds upgrade if there will be some sort of high speed crop factor (I am not holding my breath on this though). There will be a lot of interesting choices soon for many of us.

And this year will be extra fun because I will be in Vegas during PMA so i will be able to touch and feel the new toys.
