SD is slower, has less capacity, and is fragile -- none of which will fly in a typical shooting environment.

Every camera I shoot with the RAW write speed of SD cards are considerably faster than CF cards. A Sandisk Extreme IV 2GB CF card writes RAW files at 7.674 MB/sec while a Sandisk Extreme III 1GB SD card writes at 8.668MB/sec. Even a Sandisk Ultra II 2GB SD card writes at 8.265MB/sec on a 1DMKIIn.
They don't offer the capacity that is presently offered by CF cards and they are probably not as durable but being slow is not one of their characteristics.
The 1D MKII will get a new version, whatever it is. The 1D MKIII will allow higher priced sales again.
The 1Ds2 is a maybe. I don't know if they are ready yet. They may wait to splash a new camera all by itself at some other time.
The 5D. My guess is no change here. Monetarily speaking it isn't necessary.
The 30D will probably get what's needed in Canon's eyes (not our eyes) to pit it against the D200.
My guess is Canon is looking at it like this:
1D MKIII pitted against the D2Xs
40D pitted against the D200
The 5D is pure gravy.
The 1Ds MKII is pure gravy.
I think the 1Ds MKIII is being prepared to elevate the high end Canon camera into medium format territory and I have no idea how creative or how adventurous Canon will allow themselves to get here. It has no equal and I think they plan on it staying that way.
So, the current 5D owner will probably be looking at buying a 1D MKIII on the next go around, and the 40D will probably be bought by 30D and lower owners and even some D200 owners.
Of the rumors, I like the 24/70L 2.8 IS the best of all of them. I would hope that really comes to pass.
Of this thread, I think a 120 thread is unmanageable and the forum should make a weekly based thread rather than having to read 120 pages of writing. That just isn't a fair thing to do to it's members.

Ok, after no real rumours for some time I am going to make my predictions for the 1 Series for 2007.
A new 1D series camera will be announced for PMA. It will have a size similar to the 1V, and will be 8.5 fps with a full frame 12.8MP sensor. ISO will now be 100-3200 (extendable to 50 and 6400). There will be a refinement of the 45 focus point system, with more cross sensors.
There will be multiple grips available for the camera, including a WiFi grip, and a basic grip that simply adds battery capacity.
There will be a customiseable button that can be set to MLU.
The camera will be very water-resistant and will have a shutter rated for 200,000 cycles.
Price will be approx US$4500, dropping to under $4,000 within 12 months.
Approximately 3 months later the new 1Ds will be announced. It will be effectively the same camera, but with a 22MP sensor, and a maximum frame rate of 5fps. Price will be $7500, dropping to $7,000 within 12 months
Neither camera will feature internal storage. Neither camera will feature a larger than 24mm x 36mm sensor. There will be no further 1.3x cameras.
Canon will also issue a 40D at PMA - not prepared to speculate re. that.
OK, now this is all speculation, but I reckon it is very close to what is going to happen this year. ...Show more →
I couldn't read all what was written in this thread but IMHO, I think Canon will work on the revival of the DO concept.
600 or 800mm f5.6 DO IS is very likely for me.
I guess also that Canon 100-400 is due to be replaced maybe a 100-400 DO IS.
OTOH we might see more IS lenses.
1.6crop camera users have the excellent 17-55f2.8 IS, full frame users just have 24-105f4 IS so a standard fast zoom with IS seems very likely what about Canon 24-70f2.8 IS or would they finally release the monster lens they decided not to put on the market: 28-135f2.8 IS.
Zeiss 21mmf2.8 is doing very well, Canon competitor 20mmf2.8 isn't up to the job, so maybe we could see a new Canon 20mm f1.8 L

SD? I sure hope not... How about high speed support for the Extreme IV CF cards... not that would be something useful. SD is popular for P&S, because smaller memory is actually helpful. In a DSLR, there really shouldn't be any need to go to SD, and no real advantage to doing it that I know of.

Hopefully, they'll resolve the flare issue that occurs at least with the 70-300 DO. Not sure about the big prime.

A 600 or 800 mm f/5.6 DO lens would be good use of that technology, but I'm not sure that they'd want to replace the 100-400 with a DO lens.

I've heard many rumors about a new 24-70 f/2.8 IS lens, though I would not be selling my 24-70 for one with IS. I agree that Canon needs to work on their ultrawides, and I hope that something is coming down the pipe. Prime or zoom, I can accept either one!
I am using SD cards on my 350D. In my last travel to Scandinavia I did full up all my CF cards. The price of the CF was double than the SD for the same size/speed; so as I had a converter, I did buy several SD locally.
Anyway, many times the limit factor for the transfer speed are the camera inside electronics and not the memory card itself. So always is better that Canon design faster interface than choose between SD or CF. But from the point of view of the economy, SD are cheaper generally and from the capacity, CF goes first to higher capacity than SD.
Both worlds has their own proīs & conīs. SD are more easily damageable, just by physical deformation (CF has a stronger body) or electro statically (big contacts are exposed).
Right now in the USA... you can get a 8GB (speed unknown)SD Transcend card for $70, 8GB 120X Transcend CF for $97. That's aproxmately 30% cheaper for SD... But then we've heard of 32GB and/or 64GB CF cards on the horizon, not sure how much they mem they can cram into a SD card... Personally I'd much rather stick with CF... I suppose I wouldn't complain too much if I had one slot for each in a camera...
