Anyone noticed that the Live View only supports manual focusing?
I posted this to the 1D MkIII specs thread:
The live preview is manual focus only because the camera "only" uses the normally located AF sensor which doesn't receive anything during mirror lock-up. This is fine for macro work and I guess is acceptable for studio work. (Even though this is not primarily a studio camera, it doesn't lack much in resolution compared to current top Nikon camera.)
MF for live preview has some use in PJ work, over the head level and so on, but it in practice requires you to preset the focus, so there we are close to the good old "no focusing aid" era of e.g. Minox 35.
There are now 2 options for above the head level shooting with this camera: blind AF (as this far) or visual composition but manually preset focusing. I have used both methods (with 5D and Minox), and both yield reasonable keeper rates with shortish lenses.
For remote work, it would be very useful if the live preview would include SW controlled manual focusing, but I don't know whether that is possible in practice....Show more →
It took a while, but yesterday our Nikon shooting colleagues at FM got into the spirit of things and started their own rumour thread... https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/510754 - A little over 7 pages in 14 hours - way to go - and they are just getting into the swing of it..
And theirs is the more general "New Nikon Gear" title so that if they don't get what they want at PMA, they can just keep going... Come to think of it - that's not such a bad idea... ( What about it Jeff?)
There are some very nice features that I would like to have. F.e. I could use the live view for my astrophotography, I like the extra detail in the whites and more little stuff. I'm just not so happy with the 10mp which is a 'marginal' 25% upgrade from 8mp. No more DR and we have to wait for the noise behavior. I think I will switch, but I am certainly not in a hurry to get one from the first batch. I may even wait for the 1ds3 specs before I decide.
I do like the 16-35 lens. Hopefully it is a real improvement of the current version.
I also like the 580 AW, however also I had to buy a type 1 very recently. Still worth the upgrade. I really hope they have a decent off-shoe cable this time. The old one was/is plain rubbish.
Now I wait 'patiently' (NOT) for the 1Ds3 and this 100-400/4..... what is taking them so long

IMHO it's zero.
I don't recall Canon making two announcements in the same occasion.
Well, the 20D was announced in Aug 04, and the 1DsMkII in Sept of 04, both in time for Photokina. So it's not exactly without precedent. I think they are going to release in tranches to increase the buzz. The 1DMkIII is quite an announcement, worthy of the stage by itself for a couple days at least. I would be shocked if there were no 30D replacement this spring, and PMA is too important a show for them not to announce it if it's here.

I'm betting that there will be a separate annoucement for the 40D and that the decision was based on not wanting to get that camera lost in all the hoopla over the 1DMkIII.

correct me if I'm wrong (I don't have contacts in) but is the image of the III on Canon's website not featuring the 50mm 1.4 that everyone ripped into "fakes" for featuring? I thought the concept was that Canon would never feature their flagship shown sporting such a lowly lens.
Again, I could be wrong, but it sure looks like the 1.4 to my slightly blurry eyes.

Thank you for correcting me.
So, there's still hope for the 40D. After all, it's not that difficult to put the 400D's sensor and dust system in the 30D.
I read on another forum that someone was talking to a Canon rep today (They got to play with the new 1D3's) and he rekons one of the reps seid that there will be a full framed verson on the way with 12fps and is expected to sell for around $6800 (Au) when its released.
Its Proberly BS, But it would be nice and welcomed by those who want more resolution and full frame.
Regarding Canon's marketing and PR, they seem too have stolen the Apple play book.
Maximum secrecy to generate buzz, announce before big shows to hog the spot light and media attention, announce early, announce often. I'll bet we hear Canon stuff every month. Not DSLRs only, but everything. They will not let 70th/20th get away without plenty of new things to hype. Even if it is just 3-6 new weights of an inkjet paper surface.

Does this mean it's Zero Hour for everyone to start "officially" complaining about the capabilities/flaws in the new camera, and to start jumping ship?
