The consensus is actually for thursday.

The original announcement was for the 23rd which is Friday then I did see the 22nd but I'm not sure it wasn't wishful thinking.

I'm getting disappointed waiting on the 40D. I'm beginning to think it's not going to happen or if it does it will be a 30D refreshed. I sure don't want that but who really knows? There has been more speculation on the upper class of Canon and very little on the 40D. I know I want to sell my 20D but won't until I know the replacement is worthy enough.

A writer (Lordcarl) posted here that the announcement is at 5:00 pm on Thursday, Tokyo time.

http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?month=2&day=22&year=2007&hour=17&min=0&sec=0&p1=248

Some selected locations/times:

Tokyo 5pm Thu Feb. 22
San Francisco midnight Wed/Thu
London 8am Thu
New York 3 am Thu
Moscow, Baghdad 11am Thu
Beijing 4pm Thu
Sydney Oz 7pm Thu
New Delhi 1:30pm Thu
Honolulu 10pm Wed
Chatham Island 9:45pm Thu

There are meetings with sales forces in London and other locations on Friday 23, which may have lead some to think the announcement is then.

What does 19 cross-type AF points mean?

It means more precision in focussing with a point other than the central one - so people like portrait shooters can flip to get a shot using one of the non-central points and be more confident that the camera will deliver - AF point which are not cross-type often miss, if the contast is not in the plane they are looking for.

It surprises me that the rumor threads concentrate so much on possible camera bodies while this forum normally seems more interested in lenses. Wondering why that is. Perhaps there is just more to speculate about with feature-rich cameras?

There are at least two reasons, I think. Your hypothesis seems valid, plus we can extrapolate from previous camera releases to predict future bodies (both specs and timing).

The camera will have 19 cross type AF

There are two type of AF point sensor.
The cross type is more sensitive because it detect vertically and horizontally the contrast to make the focus.

In the 5D there only one (the center).
if I remember the 1d serie has 9.

The 5D has 3 - the center, and the "invisible" AF points directly above and below it.

BTW for the Foveion/Truecolor type of sensor anticipators out there, Sigma will be releasing the SD14 on March 6, 2007.

Canon also seem to feel that cross-type sensors do better at tracking moving objects - the two invisible AF points next to the central sensor on the 5D are cross-type, so tracking may be even better than in the current 1 series.

Perhaps we should Think BRIC when predicting changes to Canon's SLR line up. (Brazil, Russia, India, China)

I've been reading a brokers/analysts' reports recently. Several say the big growth market for SLRs in the next few years will not be Japan/N America/Europe but the BRIC sector.

So the new cameras/features may not make much sense to N American/European users (a la Print Direct button on 5D) as they're designed to appeal to BRIC consumers.

I think Canon have so much they could announce in the 20th anniversary of the EOS system (as of March this year)...

Let's hope that they decide to "make a statement" and release a set of market dominating DSLR products, rather than drib and drab releases out over the year to keep publicity going etc...

They will release something of importance, I mean look what they did for the cameras last year celebrating their tenth anniversary.

Canon has to release a successor to the 30D. It's already late given the Rebel XTi, with more pixels. There's very little to recommend the 30D in the marketplace right now; it's basically 2.5 year old technology. I can't imagine that Canon won't replace it for PMA. To fail to do so would represent either a complete miscalculation as to the market or a failure to execute by engineering/manufacturing.

Let's face it. Canon has delivered what lately? 5D. Everything else has been "me too" or cosmetic/incremental updates to existing products. Where is the innovation? They've been in a holding pattern for quite some time, at least as far as publically released products are concerned. Meanwhile, the competition has not been similarly sitting still. It's time for Canon to step up.

Canon releases the ImageRunner 5075 with imageCHIP (Concurrent Hyper Intelligent Platform) system architecture.

And the Nikonians call Canon "the copier company". Ha!

I was expecting a pretty major upgrade to the 30D but I must admit, this took me totally by surprise. Little bit bigger than I would have liked but very full featured. It looks like the rumors of a new format and lens mount were true.

I must be missing something here. Where is the major upgrade to the 30D? All I see is a product called "Image Runner"!

Yes, you're missing the smiley face at the end of the paragraph.

Don't know if this would mean anything, but in the Canon Middle east website, the page for the 1D Mark II N no longer exists. Every other camera still has a working page...

Boy, I'd better stop buying camera equipment and start saving if I'm ever going to catch up.
