(At least, I think he was a pooka. It's been a few years since I've seen the movie.)

Congratulations, you win! The grand prize entitles you to guess when we'll officially hear something about the upcoming camera announcements!

Pooka pooka pooka. We'll officially hear something at least 3 months later than we wanted to, which would have been last year sometime.

If the 'Little Erwin' rumour is right, then Canon have kind of killed two birds with one stone at 12MP and FF but weatherproofed and with 1 series AF and a high fps, this is both the 1DII replacement and the rumoured 'high-end' 5D
For the low-end 5D, there is really no great rush to replace the 5D - until manufacturing progress means they can take more cost out.

Absolutely. All they could do is lower the price of 5D...
Great new, no-grip 1D and a cheaper 5D - that would keep them running...

In the same way, the 1DsIII replacemt can easily wait until the fall.

1DsIII has been waiting way too long already, bring it on!

Fans of the 1Ds series will not like waiting, but there is no competitive pressure on Canon to bring one out.
Two cameras in the spring and two in the fall sounds very do-able, with a 40D and a 5D replacement coming in somewhere.
I suspect that the 400D is on a separate development schedule, replacing as fast as a consumer camera, withh yearly updates scheduled to give a refresh in time for each Christmas selling season to maximise sales - Canon time their releases well to hit maximum sales.

I'm shocked if there is no replacement for the 30D, however. Shocked. Even if the 1D Mark II N and 1Ds Mark II are in need of replacing (and they are), Canon's bread and butter is the consumer (XTi) and prosumer (30D) market. I feel the D200 has made too many advances into that portion of Canon's market share and they have to do something to shore that up.

If the 40D isn't coming out at PMA, I will be floored.

I don't care about the 40D. Ok, they are never selling as much 1Ds as 40Ds, sorry but who is so ******* stupid to buy a new 1DsMk2 now ? I mean I would like to see the sales of it. I would say nearly 0... It still costs 6500EUR and you can get a 5D for 2200EUR. I know it's no PRO body, but the people who need the pro body already own a 1DsMk2 for years and all other don't care that much about it. I mean the file quality is nearly the same...

So plz don't wait till fall and if they do I wish they are getting suprised by Nikon, Sony, Leica or who ever....

They do what they do very well and don't really need replacing.

Unless it's to incorporate something that Canon perceives a professional needs or there has been a technological breakthrough that would warrant replacing the line, they can wait.

They do. As Chris pointed out, 5D gives you almost everything 1Ds does
for 1/3 of the price... Yeah, it's not as solid and AF is not as good, but
IQ is equal or better... 1Ds can't stay unchanged as there is no reason
for it right now to be that expensive. They could cut the price to, let's say $4K,
but that would mean no upgrade for next several months (if the upgrade
is close, they wouldn't bother with the price change, plus politically it would
hurt Canon to lower the price of the flagship). So it's just hanging there
with zero sale, waiting until Canon decide to release the upgrade...
Practically it means there is no flagship Canon camera now...
How long can they afford not to have one?

Andrew

Regards,

Just realised - the poster of that is Keith of Northlight - which moves a MF Canon into the realms of the 'very probable' to me, unless it is a prototype that didn't make it into production.

Nope, not me I'm afraid -- Keith (of Northlight :-)

If it is MF then I'm looking forward to the DPReview Canon MF forum and the LL MF digital forum being invaded by oiks with too much spare money and minimal photographic ability - really high res pictures of peoples' dogs/cats/ugly babies ;-)

But of course we know that it will also have front/back focus problems...

They need to sell stuff to make money. The current 1 series is very well made and most are probably no where near 1/2 useful life. If they don't give people a reason to move up, there's little demand to replace. And as been said several times - who's going to be buying a 1DsII now? Since last summer sales have probably been low. When big erwin is released, I'll buy that. If a MF camera above Big Erwin is released I'll buy that too. (What would be a good Asian name - Super Lucky Biggest Erwin?). But they don't get my money until they deliver. I'm sure I'm one of many, many people waiting to write a check.

So, here's my guess:

1. The new 12MP pro body is introduced next week.
2. The new 22MP body is announced but not introduced yet.
3. No update to 5D, but maybe a lower price? (Either by announcement or attrition...)
4. No update to the 30D

By the end of the year...

1. The folks dying for the 12MP pro body have gotten one.
2. The 22MP body is available.
3. Those waiting for a 40D move towards a less expensive 5D.
4. A 16MP "3D" is introduced, now that the pro body that was 16MP has moved to 22MP.

With a rather competent 400D and a less expensive FF 12MP body, a 40D is never going to be a big seller.

I love those "MF" rumors...

Wild speculation is fun.

Thanks for the link.

The "purchase" that Canon made that they are talking about was actually of some production lines and tools sold to Canon by Contax. One of the authors mistakenly said Mamiya which is incorrect. Contax was the Japanese contract manufacturer for Zeiss and Contax Zeiss made awesome medium format cameras with Zeiss optics. These were compatible with various medium format backs (Phase, Leaf, etc) up 48mmx36mm..But in the early 2000's Contax couldn't complete and stopped making medium format cameras. They sold their production lines and tools to Canon.

Regards,

I forgot the Canon buying Mamiya/contax equipment rumors of a couple years ago. They would certainly change the mount, but could certainly use the production equipment and employees.
Now THAT would explain the MF back makers freaking out. The P45 suddenly seems less attractive. The next 1 series will likely handle data rates of 100-120mps. Canon could build MF cameras at 24 and 44 mp and have 3fps. Same processors, and software essentially the same. Glass needs to be brought up a notch from the last Mamiya 645 offering (good but not zeiss/hassy good).
