I think I'd reather deal with a neutral black and resultant lack of saturation, compared to the first and third examples.

In Guy's examples, the greens certainly look quite different between the M8 and DMR, at least on my crappy uncalibrated work monitor.

I'm with Guy, it would appear that a profile can't solve this problem, even though it can get you perhaps 75% of the way there. I, too, look forward to Leica's response to this with interest.

Carry on...

Alright, I'm going to ask the dumb questions that have been troubling me.

But why does the P30 profile turn the M8 magentas to black? And what would a P30 file look like if the M8 profile was applied to it? Would the blacks turn purple?

I might have missed the reason for this somewhere along the line here.

To clarify- I guess I understand that the profile tells C1 to make this particular set of pixel rgb values turn into this particular color and all, but why would the P30 profile make this particular purple turn black? What happens when you use the P30 to photograph dark purple fabric?

Thanks a lot for doing the comparison, Cindy. And Jeff and Guy for your comments. Personally, I'll have to play around with the settings a little more, now that I've seen the three. It might be that I use the third for instances where there isn't an overwhelming black/magenta issue and the middle for obvious black/magenta disasters. Again, it is not a perfect solution by any means, but it does provide an esay work-around as we await more concrete informantion from Leica.

Guy, Cindy, Kurt,

I have the Joseph Holmes Chrome 100 and just quickly playing with Cindy's JPEG (center image) I find that if I convert to that space in PS and assign one of the + profiles it really helps quite a bit. What do you think Guy? Maybe one of the Dcam's would even be better.

I think that until the fix comes from Leica, we will have to use the best fix for each tricky photo that exhibits a problem. At least we have some different starting points out of C1 to work with.

Are the Phase backs IR sensitive like the M8 then? If so, a profile solution must have been around for them for awhile? Possible that I had never heard of it before because I don't use MF digital.

The Phase backs have a bit of purple cast in blue fabric, butI never saw blacks go that way.

An amusing side-light

While waiting for a latte this morning I noticed a (very attractive) woman with slightly purple pants. Itook off my sun glasses (Corning phototropic glass lens) and LO, the fabric was BLACK.

SOOO there are other conditions where a purple cast (or magenta etc) can be seen in fabric. Likely due to the filtering or enhancing (what the M8 does) of certain wavelengths

OR maybe a lotof that black is NOT really really black, and the M8 is only lettig the subtle tint be seen.

Victor, you have a point. I noticed some of my well used camera bags started to develop some purplish tint in them. They used to be black, real black.

Cindy deliberately made the black velvet outfit the subject of her image. How many times if you go out there and just take pictures, do you pay attention to those things. Most of the time, the black or dark-colored synthetic materials only make up a small portion of the entire image. Since you know the issue, you are looking and paying attention to those things . Just to put the whole thing in perspective..........

Given that your eyes cannot pick up IR I think that HAS to be due to the glasses
Must have been a 'huh..?!?' moment through given all the current discussions.

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately Leica gave me a "no way" on that one, but they did give me a dealer who will let me try, so am going there today. The dealer said that all 5 pros at open day yesterday preferred the M8 files to 1Ds2 files, so expecting great things. Will take 5D to do some kind of comparison which I aim to post here.

And how did this go ......?

Jamie Roberts has made a custom profile for the M8. He has made it available for M8 owners to try. MarcoS sent it to me and asked me to try it on the black suit.

I am in London. At lunchtime, what had started as a sunny morning had become a bleak dark grey half-night. I could have got to the dealer at 3pm but with one hour of very grim light to go it seemed unfair to test in conditions that would favour the 5D. Light allowing, I intend to go tomorrow. When I do, you can be sure I will post comprehensively and face the results like a man :)

Cindy:

You have also posted a good example of why shooting RAW with a digital is such a benefit. Imagine being able to go back to old negatives and being able to redevelop them in a different developer years later.

Here's a non-test file of the sort of thing Ilike to shoot and I am very happy with the file the M8 is giving me.

Thanks Cindy for trying out the profile and post the result.

It seems to do a good job indeed, even if maybe it would benefit from a +10/15 points saturation in C1.

Can't wait for my M8 replacement

Thanks, David. That is a real-life shot that we need to take . Up to a certain degree, we couldn't help but getting caught up in the frantic purple cast madness but now, I feel better about the camera and we will go out there and take more real-life shots.

water is red, sky is red, .....yup about right for an M8...!

Nice shot david!

I notice also the lack of banding.

Interesting how these Leicas can draw you away from even MF at times!

regards
and happy shooting
