This is cruel. Can anyone with the lens post a sample wide open, shot on a tripod, with remote?

Six, if you count the 1.8 MK1.

Could you (the owners) PLEASE do some quick (!) test to compare sharpness of this lens and 50 f/1.4. I know that the purists would be upset but a bookshelf test would do. It takes up to 2 minutes. I usually know about the sharpness of a new lens in less than an hour.

All of you guys who are checking in here looking for samples from the new 50 f/1.2L are wasting your time. Those who have a copy now are not taking photos with them. You see, this is not a lens for using. It's a lens to put in your lineup, put in your sig, take out to show your friends, etc. But no way is it to be used for photography.

Once you understand this, you will not be so impatient for samples.

(Just kidding... this poster has been on the pre-order at Onecall for months.)

as per the maual, a filter is required to insure the integrity of the dust and water resistance since the front element rotates during focusing,,

Please check again. Everything I've read so far suggests that it does not.

no need to check again..... what has been suggested by what you have read so far, is not consistent with canon's documentation....

Yeah, this actually makes no sense to me. If I'm not mistaken, at least 2 people on this thread have had the lens for at least 24 hours...in that time, they couldn't post any examples (if there were any linked, I don't see any at the moment) for their fellow FM'ers? I thought this place was about sharing....

Asim,
I suspect this lack of sample shots is for one or two reasons.

Possibility 1: The Lens is so fabulous that people are out shooting card after card of amazing shots, rediscovering their childlike creativity and being reborn into Lens-land.

Possibility 2: The lens isn't really distinguishable from the 50 f/1.4 and current owners are scratching their heads wondering if the body needs calibration or what they just bought.

There's also Possibility 3: People who got the lens will post some samples later or if/when they feel like posting and wasting their time as they don't owe us anything and could care less if we like the lens or not.

I expect this lens to be good but cmon people. There is no need for some kind of sample unless it is to demonstrate some horrible flaw. Do you guys think that the skies will open and through the 50mm1.2L the divine light will touch upon the blessed sensor?

Apologies accepted, I suppose, though I have to admit I'm somewhat at a loss to understand what seems to have become a shift from what had once been grateful appreciation for the information others have graciously taken the time and made the effort to provide to some sort of expectation where another can be held to some sort of arbitrary and self-serving expectation and receiving the same kind of unflattering scrutiny for not having done so, as if they were a paid employee who had chosen to not do his/her job.

Here is the final review. It focuses pretty fast and I'm happy with that. It will focus on any object close or far in about 1/4 to 1/3rd second. I see weird results on the box sharpness test. Its decent at 1.2 then softens up to 3.5 then sharpens up all the way to f11.

The MTF curves don't show this softening up between 1.2 and 3.5. I'm not sure why this is happening but 2 other people with 3 other lenses are having the same result so it seems to be the "norm".

As a final note the softness is not noticeable in the head shots of the model so I'm OK with it. I'm happy with this lens.

OK I shot the bokeh portion at the local flower shop. The nice girl working there
was willing to lend me her face for a few moments. This is the bokeh portion of my review.

OK box sharpness test posted.

Also posted a flower with strong back light shot.

How about some photos of people, mostly dim light, at wide open I think this will be one of the main purposes of this lens for many people.

Thanks for asking for our requests!

I look forward to your review! Thank you for sharing.

I think this will be one of the main purposes of this lens for many people.

I believe that anyone who buys this lens (I am on a waiting list myself) would not expect it to be better than 50 f/1.4 at any aperture. I cannot imagine keeping 50 f/1.4 to use above f/2.0 and relegate 50 f/1.2L to wide open (f/1.2) shots.

By the way, I think that we should be posting in "Hands on EF 50 f/1.2L" thread
