Adorama lost my preorder and they don't have the lens in stock. Bummer. Wait, I'll get the lens somewhere else and then a shipment will come from Adorama too and I'll have to send it back. :-(
You guys who are getting them, what are your sources? I've got a preorder in with Onecall and as far as they can tell me, they don't even have them on the way to their warehouse yet.
at this point all i can say is i'm going to love this lens.....i won't really get an opportunity to use it until saturday....af is excellent, build quality is top notch, and 50mm is one of my favorite focal lenghts ...no i can't tell you it focuses faster than the 1.4...it does focus faster than the 2.5 macro..... some vignetting wide open(as expected) -1.8; significantly less noticable at f2 and virtually none at 2.2....thank you canon!!!!!!

Can you tell me how fast it focuses in relation to the 35L or 135L?

Congrats! Could you tell us if the inner barrel extends past the outer barrel, when it focuses close. I'd like to know for sure if a filter will seal it against dust. Thanks Clay.

There's bound to be a high school basketball game in your area tomorrow night. Would you mind stopping in and shooting it, and letting us know how the lens performs there? Please take your 50 f/1.4 too, and compare them side by side.
sam,
i am a people shooter--no action so i have never been overly concerned wih focus speed...and given the fact that the 100 macro is one of my most used lenses, i am not the best person to address the focus speed question....it seems to be in line with most of my other lenses in termsof focus speed....
clay,
the inner barrel does not extend beyond the outer barrel..
nill,
at some point i may compare the performance of the canon 50's since i own three of them...but i have a feeling that someone else will beat me to the punch...between the 1.4 and the 2.5, i have always favored the macro...at some point i will also probably look at the canon 1.2 against the zuiko 50 1.2 which i also own...
i can't be the only one with this lens...
regards

clay,
as per the maual, a filter is required to insure the integrity of the dust and water resistance since the front element rotates during focusing,,
