Yeh, I just checked the website. Im don't think I would buy one (I would rather buy the 85 L), But would be nice to try it out when it hits the stores!

You have it and are disappointed. Mmmmm.........maby because it's not much better than the 50 1.4. Maybe it doesn't focus as quick as you thought. Image quality only marginal better? Let the world know.

Please post some samples or you will be banned
Is it sharper wide open than 35L?
SAMPLES!!!
I have never been disappointed with any Canon's EF 50mm lens unless you count that 50mm1.4 croaked AF on me and it's being shipped to Canon NJ for repair.

Many people who get their 50 f/1.4 decide to keep it despite the disappointment with its wide open performance.
The price differential will play a significant role here. Also, many people put up with the wide-open softness of the 50/1.4 because they already shoot with the 85/1.2.
It'll sell, but it's not going to be a high-volume lens. It will sell like the 85 does.

I agree with you that because of its price the the 50 f1.2 may not turn out to be a high volume seller. However, assuming that its optical performance compares favourably with the 85L, the 50 f/1.2 should sell better than the 85L. I see the reasons for that in the following 50 f/1.2 features relative to the 85L:
* more generically used FL.
* (hopefully) significantly faster AF
* lighter/smaller
* less expensive.
Forgot another reason: EF 50 f/1.2 does not have a high performance non-L sibling/alternative like the 85L does.
(Some of you can hurl at me one ivective upon another for saying that, but in my experience the 85 f/1.8 is a much better lens than any of the 50 f/1.4/1.8/2.5 lot.)

From an SLR stand point, this is among the few 50 mm lens that has Aspherical element regardless of molded or not. Also I believe there is floating elements so it should be a great lens like the 85mm F1.2L.
I am also looking for the Canon EF 50 mm F1.0L to do some bokeh test. PM or email me if you have one.
since Canon has already lowered their price for the 50 (now 1399 i.s.o. 1599) it should sell a lot more then the 85 1.2 ...
and for me.. well all this talk (in general) about lenses not being sharp in the corners and vignetting .. hell i shoot almost only low light .. corners are dark anyway. It's about what is in the middle. Just as logn as it focusses fast i'm a very happy man .

This is where http://www.cornevaniperen.nl/proddetail.php?prod=can5012 ebeaydojraes found this lens listed for 1125 EUR in Netherlands. As far as I can understand Dutch, it looks like they only ship within Benelux countries, and you need to pay in advance to their bank account. Both these limitations might be wrong, since I have never learnt any Dutch ...
I found this lens listed for 1250 EUR in Finland. It is also a web shop but their pages are only in Finnish, and all their URLs point to their main page. I don't know about their shipping policies, but at their physical stores you can pay with credit cards.
Clearly both these "sources" are totally useless for Englishmen, even though they are inside EU. I didn't tonight find any German web shops yet offering this lens. With German VAT of "only" 16% and in general competitive prices, I have used some German web shops for Canon gear purchases this year.
However, for most Canon lens models that already have lost their novelty premium, US prices (e.g. from B&H Photo Video) are rather competitive even after adding the shipping costs, customs and VAT. Unfortunately this doesn't apply to the latest models like 85 f1.2L and 50 f1.2L.
If you find one in germany, let me know, I live in Germany and can get stuff Tax free. There had to be a bonus for spending the last 20 years in the army!!!
