Enough with the amateurs and professionals.
The difference is pros earn their living through photography and amateurs don't.
It doesn't mean pros are smarter or better photographers. Some amateurs work can blow the doors off pros work period.
And some amateurs don't complain about the price of anything because they have loads of money.
Get over it and move on :0)
I only see anything worthwhile in the second shot. the area that's in focus is, of course, blade-thin but i've seen sharper zooms. I'd like to see it at, say, f/2.2 or 2.8.
For wide open it's quite usable, I'd say, and I don't notice any light falloff.

I can't see any light falloff in those two samples. That would be impressive.
I agree about the lack of light falloff, which is good, but do note that the sample pics were taken with a 400D, which has the 1.6x crop. I wonder how it would perform with a 5D.
i -might- buy this lens cuz it's the only choice for a few things it does(well, combinations of a few things):
F1.2
Ring USM/FTM/ AUTOFOCUS
EMD (electromagnetic diaphragm- the auto aperture)
SEALING
name another lens with all of those choices. And now that you've come up blank, name a lens that is that "compact" and "simple" that is sealed and that "good" at low-light.... there is no other choice for a 1-lens, 1-camera, BAD SITUATION setup... (unless you just wanna get your stuff wet and not be able to really rely on it so much?)
I'm thinking 1DII(or 1DS/II if i had that money) + this lens would be amazing for PJ/jungle work.
well i could always toss the happy meal lens (50/1.8) on my camera and go into the same environment- but that wouldn't seal the lens or the body... a bit of a compromise.
i don't have the 24/35L (yet), and i want a wide-aperture shorter lens like that... the 50 could be the answer.
and basically, somebody else can't tell me what to buy. it's my decision, and if i don't like it i can always FM it.
remember all the 5D's right after it hit the market, they flooded FM. Same with the 85LII now.
Saying the 50/1.2 is portable out of 1.2's is akin to saying the 1D is portable among full frame weather sealed digitals. Either something is portable or it isn't.
