Jeez guys settle down, I'm pretty surprised with the current MSRP. The 85L is well over $2000, and a faster focusing 50mm lens of the same magnitude to MSRP for $1600 is quite nice. I'm just not sure if the price will go up or down after all is said and done, I guess it depends on how well it sells.
The pricing of this new 50L pretty much puts it out of the APS-crowd league. Actually getting a 5D and a 85/1.8 is cheaper than this 50 and a 30D. A no-brainer for anyone looking for a serious portrait kit.

Conveniently forgetting the 85L just had a five hundred dollar price rise. Beginning to understand that decision a little better now.
What kind of company captures a dominant market share and then alienates 95% of their users with ludicrous lens prices?

Am I the only one who thinks the 85 1.2 is a better buy if you need fast glass?
Seriously, they should have gone for a 1.0 again, then they could have justified the price pretty easily.
Max
well the 85 1.2 is SLOW in focus. It may be faster then the old one, but it is still slow.
So now i'm thinking that that 50 1.4 doesn't sound that bad
although it does say that it focus ffaster with a 11-series cam ... i'll have to see how fast ..

Why does an APS shooter need to be a budget minded shooter ? Alot of people prefer a 1.6x body for the work they do but have very sizable investments in glass.
Not sure they exactly marketed this lenses with APS shooters in mind either. I never really liked 50mm on a 1.6x crop myself. On a FF body though 50mm is a great focal length. Takes me back to my first AE-1 lol
besides, theres still the 50 f1.4 for $300 and the 50 1.8 for $80 so plenty of options still out there for those not wishing nearly so much

Right on bro. As a primarily macro shooter, I enjoy the benefits of having a naturally deeper DOF and the magnification boost. I'm totally looking forward to a pro-level crop camera...not that I will buy one or am able to afford one, but it will be interesting seeing the crop factor evolve. Ultimate sports/birding camera, anyone?

Judging by all the $1000+ L primes in your kit list you must be in the 5% minority ??
I have two. The 85L I got for $800 and th 24L for $900. Couple of bargains. Besides, you don't have to be in the 95% majority to question the prices. Just because I can afford them doesn't mean I appreciate getting screwed.
Ummm... more ok now maybe... given the $1600 price tag for a 50/1.2
I'm not wild for f1.2... would be nice... but just a 50 that matched a Summicron would make me happy... and Canon should be able to do that for the price of the 50/1.4.

Am I the only person that feels fine with his 50/1.4 ?
this is a halo model, the pricing indicates they don't intend to sell many. Good marketing value to be able to point to a lot of exotic lenses and say "see? this is the system you're buying into with your 400D and 18-55. Someday, that giant lens could be yours..."

Sprout, are you seriously whining about the price? They have other 50mm lenses for you to buy. If you don't want it, don't get it, and you'll be in the same position you were in yesterday. CW said the 85 1.2 was selling "briskly", so it seems that Canon's higher price strategy isn't falling apart.
The point is that the 95% of the people who can't afford the 50 1.2 probably don't need it because we have the 1.4, the 1.8, and plenty of other lenses that cover that range. Did Ford alienate 99% of their drivers when they came out with the GT40 that cost over $120K? Of course not!! Does Microsoft alienate their users when they come out with some multi-processor version of their SQL Server? Of course not. Giving us more options, whether uber-premium or cut-rate is a bonus to us, not a slap in the face. If it doesn't sell well, they'll lower the price, it's all economics. You act like Canon is out to harm us by designing cutting edge lenses.
To make my point further, if you don't like Canon's price on the 50mm 1.2, buy the 50 1.2 from the competition and with the money you save, buy a nice suit and do the down right.
