I tend to stay out of the speculation threads... after all what do I konw.. but I will make this observation:
Canon's top tier cameras are currently divided between "Studio" and "Sports". If they plan to Unify the 1 series at some point, it seems likely they will have to divide the 2nd tier cameras between Studio and Sports until they can produce a full frame 8fps camera at the sub 3500 price point.
The 5D and *Possibly!) 3D could fit this bill, with the 5D as the backup Studio camera, and the 3D as the lower (10?)MP, 8 fps, Weather Sealed, sports back up camera at $500 more.
Personally, I think the whole lineup is in a quandary right now. Business decisions and market separation policies, the high cost of digital cameras, etc. are really messing things up for now. Hopefully in a year or two things will be clearer/stable, but for right now I think things are a mess.
Ok, Given current technology, example take a look at Dalsa, famous CCD maker, they already have a 11mp full frame chip acapable of 7.5 FPS.
Here are the specs:
FTF4027C Specifications
Specification Value
Resolution: 4008(H) x 2672(V), 10709376 pixels
Pixel Size: 9µm x 9µm
Active Area: 36.1mm x 24mm
Dynamic Range: >72 dB linear
# Outputs: 4
Max. Frame Rate: 7.5fps
So I would place good money that CANON will come out with a 10-12mp 8fps camera in the future, soon.
Also, Given that Canon has introduced their previous 2 1Ds's at the Photokina show in september [with a 45% increase in res] I would bet good money on a 1Ds mk3 [or mk2N] being released THIS year with over 20mp, closer to 22mp and 5fps, with a posible crop mode.
Im not too sure on how the 20d replacement will be but it will be there. A model above the 5D but below the 1Dsmk3 will be introduced, maybe its the one with 10-12mp and 8fps. The 1Dmk2n will be dragged for a little while alongside maybe at lower price.
Lots of comment on the pellicle beast but the 3D is the breaker for me. I see absolutely no point or business sense in a FF 3D sitting between the 5D and the 1DS. Just how much of a market do people think there is for FF multi-thousand dollar cameras?
The 5D has dropped in price quicker than any Canon SLR I can ever remember amongst accusations of relatively slow sales so what point a 3D?
I still favour, and want, a mini-1D style 3D with an APS sensor and see a very healthy market for it at just under 5D prices and able to pinch sales from the D2X but at a much lower price.

FYI the EOS 3 replaced the EOS 5, it didn't run in tandem.
I'm sure the rest of the rumour has as much credence.
I don't think that is correct. The EOS-5 (also known as the EOS A2e in the U.S.) was discontinued in 2001. The EOS-3 was introduced in 1998. I bought a brand new EOS-5 long after the EOS-3 came out and Canon was still producing them. The EOS-3 was selling for about $950 while the EOS-5 was at $450 - two completely different cameras for different types of photogs. Where did you get your info on the EOS-3 replacing the EOS-5?

12 days away? Canon is set to announce 70 new products on the 21st, which is 6 days away.
Yeah, I thought it was the 21st too, as many such releases apparently occur on Tuesdays. But even if it is the 21st, that makes it the 22nd where I live :-)
Sprout, if they combine the 1D and 1Ds series like the talk has been, there are a lot of PJ's and Sports photogs that will not want to spend $7k on a 1Ds just to shoot it in crop mode. The 3D would be the next generation 1D series, just a tad smaller (might be nice when trying to cram 3 bodies, 400 2.8, 300 2.8 and a bunch of shorter lenses in a bag). Full frame at 8+fps would be great! Sure, I like the 1.3 crop of the current 1D series, but at full frame, shooting a wide angle view of bikers, or for a backboard cam, would be nice.

To respond for Beni, it sounds like you got a new but leftover body. This site pegs the 5 as being discontinued in Feb 2000. I owned a 5 myself and my recollection is the same as Beni's; the price differential was large (but more like $400 IIRC) but they were both aimed at advanced amateurs, with the 3 about six years newer. The 3 did indeed take the 5's place in the lineup, with the Elan and 1 series below and above it, respectively.
It would be great to have even more choices in the Canon lineup, and I like the idea of the 1.3x crop myself, but I can't imagine Canon would build another one after marketing the 5D and investing in specialty lenses for the 1.6x crop.
There actually is a market for a FF 10FPS digital body. Those of us that shoot action sports for a living generally use very wide focal lenghts, and consistantly shoot at high frame rates. A 10FPS FF high resolution camera is just what I have been waiting for. Once that happens film is completly dead. However I have a fealling that we are still a ways away from that.
BTW I have seen images and heard rumors of a 40mm F1.2 L lense......
