when i got home to visit my family recently my sister looked at my 300D with the grip, a 17-40L with the hood, and a 540EZ on top and said "what the hell is that?? what happened to your old camera?"

I was shooting with my EOS 30 with grip and attached 70-200 f/4L, so it was not actually very big... but white... however...
I was kneeling on the floor shooting, when done I stood up and I see a guy pointing his camera at me going "oh".. as I look at him, and I understand he wants a picture of the tourist with the big camera

Yeh I bet the dad woulden't have that attitude if all that gear comes crashing down on the kids would he? 600f/4 isen't exactly the lens I would want crashing down on top of me!
This is exactly why I have liability/medical coverage through GroupInsure
I also often keep a photo of the 20D on the 600f4 handy for whenever anyone tells me the 70-200 is too big

A year ago last summer I was driving through Banff with my family on our way to Calgary. The timing was bad but we happened upon Lake Louise around mid-day. Not surprisingly, the place was packed with tourists firing away with their P&S cameras - people walking in front of others taking pictures, people who don't give a crap about the 50 unknown people crammed into the background of their picture, others trying in vain to get an uncluttered snap of the Lake with Aunt Agnes in the shot. It was cooking hot, but lugged my tripod, 20D with grip, 28-70 2.8L with hood and 580EX for fill anyway. I set the rig up and the crowd backed off giving me lots of space to work. My wife and kids sat out on the rocks, I put the camera on timer and jumped into the picture (make that pictures). I have a 20 x 30 framed picture in my office from that day and I can't help but look and smile every now and then.
But the story doesn't end there - as I was packing my gear up, a lady comes up to me and ask if I could take a picture of her using her digital camera. She explains that this is the last day of her tour of Banff and Jasper and she hasn't been able to get her new camera to work. She couldn't figure out how to review the pictures she'd taken during her trip. So she hands me her little camera bag and I pull out a P&S and there in the bottom of the bag is a compact flash. Suspecting the worst I opend the CF door on her camera and sure enough it was empty. I popped the CF in and took her picture but I was blown away that this person had just spent one or two weeks in the most scenic areas on the planet and hadn't been able to figure out something as basic as loading a CF. Ugh!

Anyone who watches "Mind of Mencia" on Comedy Central will appreciate his Tan Ta Da comment! Unreal.....

Just this week I was at Lake Quinault in the Olympic Peninsula, off Highway 101. I was taking pictures right outside my motel room one morning with my Rebel XT + 70-200mm f/4L when a guy walks out of his room to have a smoke.
He says, "Hey, that looks like a Canon lens."
"Yup, 70-200mm."
"Hey, have you heard of those new lenses with them gyros in them?"
"Yeah, they're pretty cool." (thinking he actually means IS, and not gyro stabilizers for entire cameras)
"Yeah man, you can go like this [swings hand wildy 2 FEET in each direction] and you'll get a crisp shot everyyyyyy time."

Great posts, everyone. A number of people have commented on how they hate being asked about cost.
I know we can just check B&H, or see what other folks paid on the FM review board. As for me, if they're nice folks and not interrupting my work, I just tell them.
Out of curiosity, why to so many folks hate it when people ask how much their gear costs?

For some (many?) of us, we were raised not to talk about money (whether we had it or not). I wouldn't say: "Nice suit, how much did you pay for it?" to a complete stranger. My spending habits are very personal and private.
There's also the safety question: if I tell someone I have a $2000 lens, will someone hear that and take it as an invitation to try to steal it?

Ok, I'll share some....slightly OT, but from my experience selling cameras to the general public...
Couple buying new camcorder:
Man: "How long are the tapes?"
Me: "60 minutes, sir."
Man (to wife with that look): "Honey, how long is that Barry White album?"
Answers I've given to the "What's the best camera?" question:
1. A Hasselblad with a Phase One Back for about 30k (priceless looks after that one!)
2. The one that were going to pick out based on what you really need (look of utter confusion)
Funniest Customers Ever - Always around the Christmas season:
1. Man buys camera for wife/girlfriend. Refuses to buy batteries/memory/accessories, insisting we're trying to rip him off.
2. Couple returns after Christmas Day, wife/girlfriend livid at husband/boyfriend "for being too much of a cheapskate" to get accessories, husband/boyfriend a few feet behind, staring at shoes..."I was only able to take like 10 pictures of Christmas morning!!!!!"
....oh how I DON'T miss retail!!!!
Back to topic:
I'm framing a shot of the mountains outside my office window when a co-worker says "Why don't you just use the screen to take the picture?"
I'm fiddling with my 50 f/1.4, co-worker asks "how much was that lens?"
Me: "About 300 bucks."
Co-worker: "That's crazy!"
I show the price of the 400 f/2.8.......

Uhhh, well, I'm always a little, um, well, embarassed I guess, to tell someone I spent more on my camera, lens & tripod than they, uh, they spent on their car...
Other quotes:
Flight attendant: I'm sorry sir, but you're going to have to check that backpack, our overhead bins are full.
Me: No I'm Not.
I'm hiking down the side of the road, and a car goes by at 50mph: I want your cameraaaaaaa!!!
Woman carrying a maybe 25lb child in her papoose backpack: That camera looks heavy...

I find on the norm the better the real-estate the less questions and gawks
The question of "How much is that" is the rudest,
Subtitle;
"How much is in your wallet"?
"How much do you have in your bank account?"
Gets my feet to walking real fast with I didn't hear you look :worried:

I try to be friendly with people as much as I can - I joke right back with them, but there are times when you just want to shoot in peace.
Stranger, "See that ship 40 miles out? Can you read the name on the hull?" My response is usually something like: "It's a good lens, but it ain't the Hubble Telescope"
Random comments by strangers:
"Look at the guy with the pervert lens"
"Let's beat him up and steal his camera"
"Nikon's are way better"
"Is that film?"
"Is that the big camera worth $10,000.00"
"Look at the size of that thing"
Overheard comments:
Girl (talking to boyfriend) "I wonder how his girlfriend deals with that? (After seeing me with 20D w/grip and 24-70L) "I wouldn't put up with it."
Boyfriend (shrugs and rolls his eyes) I felt sorry for the guy...
Then there are all of the "Male anatomy jokes" in which I usually reply ( if they are being particularily snarky ) "It's Representive"... Well unless I have the 50 1.4 mounted

If its someone that looks geniuinely curious I usually tell them. Obviously they expect it to be at or over $1000. And at that point everyone is a threat.
If they're being an idiot I'll usually tell them it's more than most used cars.
And if they're being slightly creepy I'll tell them it's none of their business but I keep a total for myself with a list of all the serial numbers just in case someone tries to steal/pawn them.
If they're really creepy I'll walk away but luckily no one has yet.

I get the boy! If I had that gear I could be a professional. Yeah! I play just like Chris Webber with my" Pro" NBA Basketball. All in all it is a compliment because they want to be something we can be or are.-Rich If they say why is it white , I tell them so it doesn;t get too hot, seems to work.
