p.13 #1 · What Are Some Reactions You've Gotten When Shooting With A White Lens?

Ive never had anyone say anything about the L zooms or primes but I have had tons of people(mostly DSLR shooters) come up to me when I use my 28-70 with the hood on. Its the strangest thing.

I think a lot of people know what Canon white lenses are and don't bother.

Now as far a me, I always talk to Nikon guys who have a 200-400VR it is a pretty awesome $5000 lens.

I always get "how much did that cost"

20D with 70-200f/4L - co-worker says "ooo, pretty lens"

taking pictures of some free-running guineafowl and a co-worker says "aren't your pictures going to be really blurry without a tripod?" what he didn't realize is I was taking 3-4 pictures at a time

p.13 #6 · What Are Some Reactions You've Gotten When Shooting With A White Lens?

At the games where I'm a familiar face, I often get the, "get any good pictures today?" I usually respond with either, "A few", or "I'll find out when I get back to the office and look at them on the computer".

You know, after reading through this more... I have been thinking about what I really do think of people asking questions. I truly wish there were more people that were interested in discussing this stuff that new what we were talking about. I do have a couple of friends that know something about photography and they rarely say anything about what I'm doing. I guess they know, so they don't need to ask.

I was kicked out of a place with a bouncer yelling at me "NO VIDEO CAMERAS OF ANY KIND!! CAN"T YOU READ??"
I just took a picture of him. And said "It's not, See?"
But being a genious he replied with "Still looks like a video camera to me! Leave!"
So I just walked out. His co-worker was laughing at him pretty hard after this point.

Yeah one place I heard the people talking and saying no professional gear allowed. Then they said something about white lenses b/c when I got up there he was like 'no pro gear'

My friend who was with me actually had a photo vest on and his black "L" lenses but didn't bring in his white pieces and was allowed inside. I was like whatever... oh well

p.13 #9 · What Are Some Reactions You've Gotten When Shooting With A White Lens?

I liked the post where the person was asked how much his gear was, and he said "$19.95 and it came with a set of knives." Very clever.

I also liked the one where people say their P&S is better and has more zoom and is cheaper. Once I get the 5D and the 28 - 300 whitebody later this spring, and somebody says that to me, I'm going to cheerfully say, "You are so right! I'm a colossal idiot and love throwing money away!"

It boggles my mind what people out there don't know. This massive topic shows just how little people know about photography. But I'm betting most all of us have said something similarly stupid about some other highly technical craft, and whatever that is, they might have a similar thread about our dumb comments.

Perhaps this thread is a lesson in humbleness.

I don't think those guys are there just for the symbolism. If you get my drift.

p.13 #11 · What Are Some Reactions You've Gotten When Shooting With A White Lens?

The wierdest thing i ever encounter was at a dinner and dance. I was not there as a photographer but rather as a pianist for my college jazz band which was playing a gig. I wipped out my 1DmkII + 70-200 + 580 EX for a few shots of the band when the other pianist was taking over me for a couple of tunes...

Suddenly people were asking me to take picture of them as though i was the offical photog... i was like "eh i am just the piano player".. but i think they did not hear me.. so i figured, just take the picture and move on...

Next thing i knew, i was dragged along a few tables to take picture for random people who i have no idea who they were...

The funny thing is i still have these photos on my computer and no one (from the gig) has asked me for them....

Weird

p.13 #12 · What Are Some Reactions You've Gotten When Shooting With A White Lens?

I have plenty of different things that make me really mad...

1) You're shooting some still life shots of a bicycle or a baseball and people just can't understand why you would be taking pictures of something like a baseball, and they crack their smart alec remarks like, "What're you taking a picture of? (sarcastically)" or, "Why don't you zoom in, mayble you'll see a scratch on the ball."

2) "How much does that cost?" I've tried everything, and everything I've tried always backfires! Say "A lot," they continue on about what's the exact amound, say the actual amount, they'll make a huge scene, tell everyone how much worth of equipment you're hauling around.

3) "How much do you make?" You were always taught never to ask how much someone makes if you're talking with them, but apparently, if they are holding a camera, that makes it okay. Like before, you can say something like, "Enough," or something of that sort; they will be nagging you until you give them the amount, if you give them the amount, they will start asking where to get into such a job, or why they would pay somebody to take pictures when anyone can do it.

4) "Who do you work for?" If you don't say, they'll kick you out, if you tell them the newspaper you work for, they'll tell you that there are no professionals allowed.

5) High School Football Games -- There's always that one yearbook photographer there who has an aspiration to be a photographer, but at the time has no idea of what he/she is doing. They come up to you and ask you what settings you're using, what zooms you have, what primes you have, why you use Canon...

You know what though, I tend to like they guy who will come up to you and really get engaged in a conversation with you. I've had a few long conversations with people, and most of the time, I enjoy them. The people who do talk to you for a while actually have an interest, rather than just a curiosity, they are really wondering or wanting to talk to you rather than just pester you.

And then, of course, there are the just plain funny ones...

At some events, I'll hire an assistant to help me handle my equipment, the 400 and 600 can get to be a hassle for one person. Sometimes, the assistant is an aspiring photographer himself and will work without pay, just for the mere experience of being on the sidelines or shooting using some professional equipment. Most of the time I'll allow them to use the equipment that I'm not using to shoot their own pictures on their own memory cards if they so choose to. Anyways, one time, I was shooting an event and was shooting with my 300 f/2.8, I stepped away from my assistant who had the 600 on the ground next to him and the 400 2.8 on the monopod shooting pictures. After about 10-15 mintues I looked back to see my assistant being pesterred by a couple of P&S people and various parents, while I continued to shoot, unbotherred. Hey, I guess that's why you hire assistants.

About a month later, a similar thing happened to another of my assistants. This time I had the 600 and he was holding my 400 and 300, I once again had stepped away and come back to switch out my 600 with my 400. I asked my assistant for the 400, and the kid next to him looked baffled and confused while my assistant cracked up as I took the 400 and continued to shoot. He later explained to me that he had convinced his friend that he had stolen the cameras and the lenses.

One of my other favorites was one time when I was shooting at a high school football game a while back. I had my 70-200 f/2.8, and a big group of cheerleaders came up to me to ask me to take their picture, I said "Okay", and started to walk away from them so that I could fit the large group of cheerleaders in one frame with my 70-200, which was probably 20 feet in this case. When I thought I was far enough away, I turned around to find the group gone. I shrugged it off. Later in the game I had one of the cheerleaders come up to me and ask me why I had been so mean. I was confused. She said that they thought it was mean that I just walked off when they asked me to take their picture. Apparently they had not heard me say "okay" and had thought I was just walking away from them. I explained it to her and had a quick laugh.

I've had some similar experiences to other people on this post, but those are a few that are firsts as I can tell so far.

I had a weird situation now i remembered..

I was in a chinese restaurant with a couple of friends..

After numerous requests for water to be brought to our table...
My friend got fed up and asked for a entire pitcher of water...

The waiter was really confused at first.. and then was smiling repeating "pitcher pitcher..."

After a few seconds, we realise he was pointing at my camera and thought we were asking him to help us take a "picture"....

We all laughed and posed for one anyway...

im a professional photog and im out and about in public places everyday, my gear does get alot of attention. 1 to 3 times a day i have people ask me questions about my gear, usually when they comment on my 1d2 the question is "is that digital" and what resolution is the camera" and "how much did it cost" and "how far can the 70-200mm 2.8L pull something in" for the last question i usually tell them not much...its just big because its a fast lens.

I always get the how-many-megapixels question. I used to answer it, but the whole "my HP camera has more" answer gets old quick. Now I just say "lots" or "enough" or "yes."

Taking pictures of my daughter's horse show with the 100-400, there was a professional there taking pictures to sell to parents. I still have a lot to learn but remember a lot from the 1 course I took 30yrs ago. Anyway, I used the term "fast lens" I think to describe the Nikon 70-200 ( I think) f2.8 she was using, and I got a blank look and "isn't the camera shutter what is fast ?" and so had to explain the term to her. She probably got better pics than I did but that tells you that "professional" fits a lot of circumstances

When people ask me how many megapixels my original 1D have I change the subject by showing them how fast it is. 8 fps is a wonderful thing.

It usually isn't the white lens issue with me. I dress full camo and put a small childs t-shirt over the lens secured with rubberbands (taping and all with moisture, I don't risk it). When out shooting people stay away from me.

The best reaction I ever got was when I passed my camera with 70-200 to my seven year old at the park and let him take some shots. A group of women (parents with kids playing in the same park) couldn't believe I let my children use a camera/lens that cost more than their car (and my 20D 70-200 f4.0L isn't very expensive)!
