p.11 #1 · What Are Some Reactions You've Gotten When Shooting With A White Lens?

At a little league playoff game last summer I was using my 70-200 f4, a woman said, ”I bet you can take pictures of kids across the street with that.” Huh

I guess one of mine would be at Woodland Park Zoo I over heard a man tell his lady friend to move that guy knows what he's doing. If only he new but I got a chuckle out of that one.

Another time I was shooting my daughters soccer game a guy asked me who I was with. He thought I was working for the paper.

At the St. Louis Zoo today with my 20D and 70-200 f/2.8L I was shooting a Puma and there was a kid next to me in a wheel chair and he said to his mom, "Holy shit look at that camera" I was trying not to laugh. Too me its funny cause I never think about it. As I took the camera away from my face he did a double take cause of how young I was...
lol...

I often hear people saying they don't like using white lens' because they attract too much attention. That got me thinking, what do people say to you, or whats the expression on their face when you fully extend your 100-400mm L IS? It would be nice to hear some stories.

I usually get people coming up to me holding up their disposible cardboard cameras asking if I could take their picture. Sometimes it seems like I'm taking more pictures for other people than I am for myself.

It wasn't a white lens, but four days after I got my Rebel XT, I was at the coast for the weekend, taking pictures in a small town at night. I had my 28 f/1.8 with hood and a Vivitar tripod, and was walking around taking shots of buildings and storefront windows, when these three teenage guys come up and say "Hey, can you take our picture?" I'm like, "Ummm, okay," and I fire off a couple of shots of them posing in front of the store window. They didn't ask me to e-mail them to them or anything, they just said "Cool, thanks!" or something like that, and walked off. "Ooookay, that was wierd," I thought. Then, a few minutes later, another kid asked me to take his picture! I remember thinking "Man, what's gonna happen when I get a big lens?!?"

As of yet, I haven't gotten too much other than some "Whoa!" or "Wow, that's a big lens" kinda comments with the 70-200, but I'm sure someone'll come up with something creative before too long.

It was 5am and we were waiting for the sun to raise and to lit some big statues. There was like 50 people standing in front of the statues ready to shoot while I went to the side to get stone faces from profile. I had my 20d with grip and sigma 100-300 f4 with hood on. While I was making myself comfortable and preparing everything someone holds my shoulder and asks me to step aside so others could take a shot as well... I look back and there was like 20 people behind me waiting to shoot from that "special" spot that I found. I just moved 2 meters away, set my gear again and watched how everybody took my old place and shoot while kneeling like I was

I remember a few months ago I was out taking some night photos at a small coastal town when a group of teens came up to me when I was on the beach doing some long exposure shots and they asked me what I was doing? When I told them I was taking photos, they seid "Isen't it to dark?" Then I showed them the photo on the LCD and they where like "Wow how did you do that?"

The best one I've heard was at a hot air balloon launch this summer. I'm standing about 20 ft away from a balloon still laying on the ground but with the fire burning and the balloon starting to fill.
I've got my 17-40 lens on. The guy standing next to me is pointing at the flame but has a 300mm on the camera.
I watched for awhile, he keeps shooting, until finally I had to ask, what are you shooting at?
His reply, "I borrowed this Canon from my brother-in-law. It's obviously a piece of junk. Everything's out of focus. I keep telling him NIkon's are better. Can you see anything through that dinky lens you've got?"

I was shooting a Texas 5A playoff game at Texas Stadium and I had a 600f/4 with me testing it out for the first time and I swear I had 10 people say "where did you get the telescope?". Its funny when it happens, amd now its almost routine.

p.11 #10 · What Are Some Reactions You've Gotten When Shooting With A White Lens?

One day I was out shooting with my Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 (which isn't white, but is big) and I had a cop on a motorcycle stop me. He told me there were complaints about me shooting. Instead of giving him attitude and explaining that I can shoot anything I want I just showed him my LCD screen with shots of signage that I liked. At that point he backed right off and told me to have a nice day, got back on his cycle and left.

I was feeling really bad, had I upset someone enough to have them call the cops? Did people think I was a pervert?

Then I got home, loaded my pics and noticed the bottom left of the frame... I'm pretty sure no one actually complained.

I shoot with this gear 5-7 days a week. The only time I get comments is when people are drunk at a baseball game or someone is the type that just always has to be the center of attention. Now I have a news flash for ya. Up until 1 year ago I shot all Nikon gear. Same sized lenses just black. I got all the same remarks the same places in the same quantity.

In general when I shoot all the types of work that come with working for a larger newspaper, I just rarely rarely ever have anyone comment on my gear ever. EVER! Black or white its probably the size that gets attention, and a big black lens attracts as much as a white lens the same size. When I go shoot in factories, christmas shoppers in malls, high school sports, peoples homes, churches the ballet, the theatre, concerts, fires, floods, photo essays, in hospitals and on and on. Nobody says a thing about the 70-200 IS. 100-400, 300 F4, 400 5.6 The big glass 400 2.8 and 600 and once in a blue moon the 300 2.8 get an occasional comment. But hey those ARE really big. YOu forget just how big when you use them all the time.

I was shooting my grandaughters soccer game from the end of the field with a 300 2.8 and a mother came up to me and asked why I was taking photos of girls. I explained to her that I was photographing my grandaughter. Se walked away and sat next to my daughter. During the period break i walked over to my daughter and asked the woman if she had met my daughter.

I was on a ferry on my way to Seattle and was using my 20D and 70-200 to take pictures of an eagle that was flying nearby. When I finished, I was walking though the ferry and some high school age kids stops me...

Kid: What's that, a G?
Me: Huh? Its a 20D
Kid: Huh? That probably cost you a grand, huh?
Me: Ahhh... Sure.

I really wish the lenses weren't so conspicuous!! Anybody seen a how-to on painting these lenses black?

-Brad

Wrap it with black gaffer's tape. Knock's down the conspicuousness factor nd provides no-mar protection at the same time. I use grey on my 70-200, a friend green on his 300/2.8. Makes them look a little ratty. I also tape over the identifying marks on the camera.

p.11 #16 · What Are Some Reactions You've Gotten When Shooting With A White Lens?

Im seeing a lot of the same questions I have been asked, so Its good to know its a universal thing..

Funny thing happened to me last year at an award ceromony at my daughters school. I was in the aisle taking pictures of the ceremony when two, not one, attractive women approached me and asked me all sorts of questions about my camera. Even going so far as wanting to 'look through it" (A 20d with 70-200is). For a brief moment I forgot where I was, and a true guy thought came over me... "Why didnt I have this stuff when I was single and in College? "

After the ceremony, my wife, who was sitting across the auditorium, came up to me, being funny as usual and a good sport said.. "boy, I bet you wish you had that camera back in your single days."

One other incident when I was younger and out with a few friends at a bar, I asked a girl who was with her friends , if she wouldn't mind taking a picture of me and my buddies. She said no problem, and asked for our camera. Its then I proceeded to tell her, we didnt have one, but she could use hers (Which was on her table). It got a good laugh from everyone, and we partied with them for the next few nights.

I've had the mom with a 75-300 comment after seeing my 70-200, that they need to get a longer lens like mine.

And, the funniest experience I've had, while not about a lens.....
I was shooting H.S. wrestling this weekend, using two IR remote fired Vivitar flashes. As I was collecting the flashes afterwards, I had a gentleman ask me if they just took pictures at regular intervals during the match. Told him that they were flashes, fired remotely to which he replied - oh, so you can get different angles then. Tried to explain that they were just flashes, but not sure it sunk in.
