p.5 #1 · Canon "Sleeper" lenses

I have to second this. An older version of the 28-105. I bought one with an Elan II quite a few years ago and have always been impressed with it's performance.

This lens blows the 28-135 IS away, in terms of image quality and price, but most people still choose the IS anyway. Oh well, that is what Canon wants anyway...

A few of you have mentioned the 28-70mm f/3.5-4.5 II

A copy of this lens was tested on PZ - here is part of the verdict:
"The Canon EF 28-70mm f/3.5-4.5 II is one of the little known secrets and more than that itīs also available at very low prices on the used market (< 100 bucks at eBay)... the resolution figures are highly impressive..."

Again, what are you basing this on? --c

The 28-105 has good picture quality, but its not going to "Blow away" the 28-135 IS It is slightly better though from what I've read.

I love my Canon lenses so don't get me wrong. But I'm really surprised nobody has mentioned the Tamron 28-75 Di 2.8 lens. Truly a great lens for $350. Don't even see the need for the Canon 24-70 2.8 after using the Tamron.

Well, that depends on what you need. Is color and contrast important to you? Then Tmron is no substitute for 24-70L. How about focusing speed? Full-time manual focusing? Weather sealing? etc

Incredible lens though no one seems to use it!

Somebody (overseas) had one for sale here a few years back for a mere 25 grand.

I found out later that a friend of mine had managed to talk him down to 10 grand, though he never actually bought the lens.

Good thing I didn't know about that 10k figure at the time, or I would've been QUITE tempted to get the darned thing . . for no good reason.

Without a doubt the 85 1.8, and 50 2.5 macro.......in that order. But the 85 1.8 will eat the 50 for lunch , but still a great lens for the cost. You get a sharper than the 1.8 50mm, plus a tack sharp 1-2 macro.......two lens in one!

Wow just to find one is a achevement in itself, to find one for sale is also another, But to find one at that price is Unheard of!

The only price ive ever seen it, was $80,000 (US) on a website ages ago, I think thats the new price. They had used it on a Canon XU-1 Video camera using the EOS adaptor (Which gave them a 7x crop) then added a 2x TC which gave them a focal length of 16800mm!! Now imagine that for you bird photographers!

I picked up a very well used 20-35 2.8L about a year ago at a local camera shop for 125.00
I had never even heard of this lens at the time but it's as sharp as can be and one of my favorite lenses.
The crazy thing is it was in the used lens case for a couple of weeks before I purchased it.

50 2。5 macro lens was said to be one of the sharpest lenses out there.

I have one. But I seldom use it. I should not have bought it.

Anyway, too late.

There are many other easy and quick ways to spend 10 grand.

Unfortunately, this is true.

Also unfortunately, there are only so many times I can spend 10 grand at a time like that. Though trying to convince my WIFE of that is sometimes a bit difficult.

She seems to think that I make enough I should be able to spend that much without thinking too much about it. Well, I can (could) . . . but not very frequently.

What about the 28-200 f2.5-5.6? A cheap lens but a great walkabout lens for a film camera.

Also the 400 f4 DO is another lens thats not that talked about alot.

One problem, though. To get rid of it, I'd have to find ANOTHER sucker to pay at least 10 grand for it.
