p.3 #1 · 4 Canon Lenses

17-85 ef-s for a general purpose walk around lens. It would also handle wide angle for me.

70-200 2.8 IS (I debated on the 4 on this one for size. I'm not sure I'd want to carry this lens around all the time, but I have the feeling I could get used to it and the 2.8 would be really nice.)

100-400 IS - I am really getting into wildlife photography and this would give me a very versatile wildlife lens.

The hardest lens for me to pick is the low light prime. I am not sure what focal length I would like and since it would have to be a non-L I haven't read as much about which ones are the best. I am thinking I would want something wider than the 85 which I thought about picking since I would have the 70-200 2.8 IS, so I guess I would chose something like 28 1.8.

Ha! I use a 1.6 crop camera, only have 4 Canon lenses, and 2 are L's.

My real-life choices:

24mmf2.8
50mmf1.8
70-200f4
400f5.6

I had the same question last year.
That is what I end up buying.

17-40L f4
70-200L f4
50 f1.4
100 f2.8 macro

I found myself in need of more fast wide lens and I got a
sigma 20 1.8.

Since then I updated my apriori belief to not buy leneses that fit the FF and
I am now thinking about a ultra wide. 10-22 or sigma 10-20

10-22
24-105 f4L
100-400 L
85 1.8

This is really not a simple question because it really depends on what you subject matter you wish to shoot and what crop factor you are using but if you want the most versatility in a full frame camera such as the 5D or qDs Mark II i would select the following:

24-105 f/4L IS, 70-200 f/4, 300 f/2.8L, 500 f/4L (and 1.4x and 2x tele-converters)

With a 1.6x crop camera I would select:
17-40 f/4L, 24-105 f/2.8L, 100-400 f/4-5.6L, 500 f/4L (plus 1.4x teleconverter)

Under no circumstances would I get an EF-S lens if you can get just 4 because it locks you into a 1.6x crop factor camera.

Or after reconsideration:

28-350 L
35 1.4 L
85 1.8

He wrote it was for a 1,6X crop camera. And you could only take 2L lenses.
And you pick 4L lenses + 2 extenders and tell us it's for a full frame camera

It really depends on what kind of shooting you do... for me this would be the ultimate list:

15mm fisheye
16-35mm f/2.8L (24-70 if you have FF)
200mm f/1.8L
100mm Macro

I'm with meejahor (Andrew)

I buy what I can afford, when I can afford and if I was starting from scratch and could only buy four lenses, they all would be "L's". I also don't think that a four lense limit is realistic either.

But in the spirt of the game, here goes.

Canon 16-35L
Canon 50/1.4
Canon 85/1.8
Canon 70-200/2.8L IS

I am a FF (film) shooter with 4 lenses - two of which are Ls.

In the spirit of the OP's question
this is what I'd like to see in my bag if I were shooting a 1.6x DSLR:
EF-S/10-22
24-70L or 24-105L/IS (I haven't settled on this one yet)
70-200L/IS
100/USM Macro

I think I could drop my 1.4x TC as the DSLR has a 1.6x crop.
Dropping the 50/1.4 for the 100/USM Macro would be a tougher call.

Can I keep my 50/1.4, add a 500D 77mm and still stay within the 'rules'?
EF-S/10-22
24-70L or 24-105L/IS (I haven't settled on this one yet)
70-200L/IS
50/1.4
500D 77mm

Here's my list:

17-40L
24-105L
50/1.4
100 f2.8 macro

It probably would make more sense to choose a 70-200L instead of the 24-105L -- no overlap with the 17-40L, and greater extension of range. But currently I have no need or interest in greater range, and I can picture enjoying both the 17-40L *and* 24-105L despite the substantial overlap. In a few years, when the kids are older and playing sports, I would definitely swap the 24-105L for a 70-200L.

The kit that I am trying to get is one that has been suggested by Shivatron and others:

16-35 (in the works)
50 1.4 (have)
85 1.8 (have)
70-200 2.8 IS (dreaming about)

I would take the folowing:

From Canon:
24mm 1.4 L
50mm 1.4
85mm 1.8
200mm 2.8 L

Alternative, the budget solution for MF fans:
- CZ 28mm 2.8, CZ 50mm 1.7 or
- CZJ 20mm 2.8 CZJ 35mm 2.4

Huum, I want to cover the range and still go long, mostly wildlife

24-105 L IS (someday, soon I hope)
100-400 L IS
500 f/4 L IS
100 2.8 Macro

with a 1.4 tc for the 500

Yaa-hooo! This is fun!

35/1.4L
85/1.8
200/1.8L
1.4x TC

TC counts as one lens - not an L, I think.
