This could just be that 10D sharpening algorithm isn't as aggressive as 1D. That's all.

Well not to mention that if the 10D produces slightly soft images from the 135mm F/2.0 then there is clearly something wrong with the camera. Especially if the lens works great on a 1D.

If something is really wrong with the Lens you would expect it to crop up across all lenses.

In theory I agree with you, However at that point you would see that more SHarpening could be applied to the unaltered photo. Looking at Larry's pictures I don't see that as the case.

Besides the 1D can have in-camera sharpening completely turned off, and given Larry's nature I would image that is where his stuff is initially set up as.

I thought larry was complaining about his shot on MOVING target (Tiger Woods swining) not be as good as 1D?

I am not sure if that's a valid comparison with 10D. 1D has the same autofocus system as 1v and 10D has the same as Elan 7. I doubt Elan 7 works that well with action, maybe I am wrong here...

Or is Larry's issue with static objects?

(I have also noticed after shooting at a bunch of flowers that the autofocus system seems to be very sensitive to vertical edges. I'd aim at the center of the Bluebonnet which has the stem and some outer petals, thinking it'd lock at the petals. However, it locked on the STEM instead, making hte petals slightly blurry with shallow DoF.

if I move the center of the box so that it only contain the petal and NOT the stem, then it focused on the petals and making hte stem blurry. So i think it's sensitive to vertical edges, which is not unsual for autofocus system to do.

(distance we're talking about here is under 1 cm, but with F4 @ 200 mm it could make a photo "appear to be" out of focus easily at close distances. However, it's still within "Spec" of the autofocus system. it's job is to find edges and contrast within the focal BOX, so if it thinks vertical edges are more important than contrast, it could very well lock on the stem of the flower).
