I have the feeling that the original poster is just trying to justify his EOS 1-series purchase! Seriously!
For anyone here who "doesn't get" the 5D, you probably don't need it! (And I don't mean this in a derogatory manner, I just mean that it's not a camera that you have a genuine need for!).
I have shot Canon for the last 20+ years. In all that time, I have only owned two DSLR Canon bodies. There is a very good reason for that - I mainly shoot people for a living! (I've always wanted to say that. ). For me to spend money on a DSLR, I have to justify the cost to myself.
So, the first DSLR that I could afford (in my mind) and that I thought was worth the money, was my original D30. This was, in many ways, a "milestone" camera - the first affordable DSLR from Canon. the first one with a CMOS sensor, and a camera which was light-years ahead of the competition (at the time) in terms of image quality and ergonomics (finally I could use all my EF lenses with digital equipment!). The D30 served me well for nearly three years, and I earned my living with it.
I skipped the D60 because it was not enough of an upgrade from the D30. Twice the pixels (so what?), but not much else.
I ordered the 10D sight unseen, and received one on the first day they became available! Why? Because it was another groundbreaking camera, IMO. Much better than the D60 in many ways, and much cheaper. I still use it to this day and it is still earning me money - I still earn my living with it!
The 5D? I ordered one yesterday! Again, sight unseen. This is another "milestone" camera, folks! Because I shoot mainly people (weddings, portraits, etc.), I have been racking my brains for the last few months about how I can justify the cost of an EOS 1Ds MkII to myself. I was figuring out how to get the cash to purchase one of these. Do I need weather sealing? No! I've shot with the 10D in the rain (when I had to), but I don't really need it. I want full frame! I want my lenses too work as designed! I want the DOF control that you only get with full frame! (The only problem is that I will now have to buy some other lenses! ). I want the bright viewfinder! Finally, I can focus manually again if I have to, so guess what? I want the interchangeable focusing screens!
I will now have the best of both worlds - full frame, or I can CROP to get the desired telephoto framing. I will have the ultimate in DOF control, my 16-35mm will behave like an actual 16-35mm, and I will save money by not having to purchase a Sigma 12-24mm! And the best part is, I don't have to justify the cost of an EOS 1Ds MkII to myself! The 5D is extremely good value! As soon as the price was confirmed, I ordered one! Obviously, the price /performance ratio was one that I was comfortable with!
The above works for hobbyists as well - only YOU can decide what you need in a camera, and how much you are willing to pay for it! Personally, I think that *at this time*, full frame CMOS and DiG!C II processor at this price is amazing! I actually didn't believe the rumours at first, thinking that full frame was just wishful thinking, but Canon have done it!
I repeat - The EOS 5D is extremely good value - but only if you NEED a camera like it!
