p.3 #1 · Zuiko Test: 21/3.5

I'm not sure why people are so skeptical - the Zuiko lenses were very highly regarded when they were current, were they not?

steve,

i don't see this as skepticism.   we are simply pointing out minor flaws in this test in an attempt to withhold the market from blowing out of proportion in a mass exodus search for zuiko lenses before more accurate tests have been displayed.   the distagon 21 is a phenomenal lens and always will be.   however, we all know that new sensors are in the works from canon and soon this search for the ultimate corner-sharp lens will be null and void.   control of CA, vignetting, color, and contrast will then become a much larger issue over sharpness alone, and for that the distagon will remain king.

-erik

I'm not skeptical to the Zuiko lens. I'm sure that both the Zuiko and Zeiss are good lenses.

There is clearly skeptism in some of the responses

p.3 #5 · Zuiko Test: 21/3.5

A few final comments before I leave for four days...

I see some people coming to the defense of the Zeiss 21. If any of you think I am claiming the Zuiko to be superior to the Zeiss, let me be perfectly clear - I think the Zeiss is the superior lens.

I am not trying to convince anybody about anything. I am making our test results available to our fellow FM members. It is easy enough for any of you to validate these tests yourself - there are plenty of Zeiss 21 and Sigma 20 lenses amongst our crowd. And the Zuiko 21s can still be had for under $1,000 (although that may not last too long).

So if you doubt my motives, my methodology, focusing ability, processing, or anything else, please try the tests yourself, and see what you find. I understand the doubts. Now that I've done this 3 months of rigorous testing, and seen first-hand how easy it is to screw up a test, I have serious doubts about any lens test I see, until I am completely convinced of the methodology. So I understand the skepticism, and I don't take it personally.

In terms of my conclusions, I am keeping my Zeiss 21. That should tell you all that I think it is the superior lens. I am also thrilled with the Zuiko 21, and will probably use it more (due to size/weight) than the Zeiss.

What is the dollar value of each lens? It's hard to say, because supply/demand determines everything with these "out-of-production" specialty lenses.

if the value of the Zeiss is somewhere around $3k - $3.5k (less than the current hyper-market value), then I would think the value of the Zuiko might be somewhere around half that. That is my own opinion, and the only real determiner of the value will be the supply/demand.

I picked up my Zuiko's fairly cheap (most under or around $500), so I don't have a lot to lose. I will only be selling a couple (the rest are already committed to friends and family), so I also don't have a lot to gain, other than possibly a profit on a couple of copies.

As for now, I don't expect you all to share my enthusiasm for this lens. You'll need to check it out for yourself. As you do, I encourage you to post your findings, whether they agree or disagree with mine. I trust the results will speak for themselves.

Finally - for those of you who have been asking me if I'll sell any of my Zuiko 21s, the answer is "not yet". I have much more testing I want to do, and want to keep all my copies for another month or two. Some of mine are already committed to friends, and I will eventually have one or two that I'll sell on FM. I will not take any offers at this point, so please don't bother asking. You can find them on ebay, or other locations, as they do eventually come up.

I'll be posting more in a few days...

Lars - I understand the skepticism. I would be skeptical too, if I were reading this post.

Maybe next week I can post some more Sigma shots compared to some other lenses, so you can see how good the Sigma really is.

Until then, maybe some others out there have a 20/1.8 and a 1DsII, and can do a similar test and post some 100% edge crops for us to look at.

I withdraw my "best copy on the planet" comment (are you happy now Lars? ). Let's see some other examples.

I can post some Zuiko 21mm vs CZ 21mm corner shots in the next couple of days, I wish i would have saved my older ones.

The value hasn't changed, the resale price, that's another story. All of us pixel peepers are spending all this change to get the BEST possible results, not to have any compromises. So, at least for me, the Z21 still has all of its value.

Maybe we need an stock market style ticker for these lenses...

The Zeiss 21 is down $500 on the day at $3500, with news of the Zuiko 21's edge performance coming in from lens analyst M Hatam. The Zuiko 21mm f/3.5 rose over 30% in value after 100% corner crops were shown on Fred Miranda, to a new high of $475. Despite PR efforts by the Lars Corp, the Sigma 20mm f/1.8 is holding steady at around $300. Trading was heavy on the Bull & Sell board today in Canon primes...

Here we go. The value has already been raised to about $1700

probably a dumb question, but aren't Zukio's made for a smaller sensor?

Ah, thanks Guy. My use of the "Olympus" systems is rather new.

I would love to see the corner performance. The extreme side is barely 18mm from the center, a lot of lenses can hold its sharpness at that point. CA already begins to show on the side of the Oly in the first crop.
